The call went through.

“Jeremy, what’s going on with Savannah?” Felicia asked right away.

Jeremy replied, “I set up a meeting with Darin. He’s talking to Max’s team tomorrow, so don’t worry.”

So it was Andrea’s brother. He did seem easier to approach than Max.

“Okay,” Felicia said softly.

The next day, Jeremy didn’t show up at the university. Felicia got all the lecture materials ready for the week. With her tasks finished, she had a lot of free time, so she wandered around campus and spent some time in the library.

The weather was perfect. After lunch and a little break, Felicia checked out two books and decided to enjoy the sunshine outside. She found a bench and, as she settled in, noticed an elderly man with white hair and reading glasses. He was holding a newspaper far away from his face, squinting and adjusting his glasses, obviously struggling to read.

Felicia recognized him at once. She hesitated, then walked over.

“Mr. Gilbert?”

The old man looked up and took off his glasses, staring at her for a moment, not quite sure who she was.

Felicia felt a bit awkward and explained, “Mr. Gilbert, it’s me, Felicia.”

Recognition flickered in his eyes.

Nate Gilbert had been the president of Capital College and Jeremy’s old mentor. He’d already retired by the time Felicia started studying under Jeremy, but he always looked out for her, even bringing her along to conferences. He used to say she was the most talented student he’d met since Jeremy. She was definitely the one who’d gotten the most attention out of all of Jeremy’s students.

Nate had even introduced her to top professors abroad, hoping she’d go on to get her PhD. But instead, Felicia secretly applied for a job at BlueMarble Investments. She couldn’t let the chance to work near Max slip away. She didn’t tell anyone about it until she’d made it through all the interviews.

She could still remember how Nate looked when he found out. He hadn’t said a word—just got up and walked away, his face dark with disappointment. Felicia knew he was furious and let down. They hadn’t spoken in almost two years.

Now, seeing him again, she felt so guilty she almost didn’t want to say hello.

Nate glanced her way, but didn’t say much. He just handed her his newspaper.

“Will you read this for me?” he said.

Felicia stepped closer, took the paper, and sat beside him.

Just then, a middle-aged man in a black suit walked over. He handed Nate a phone, bowing politely.

“Sit, it’s Mrs. Gilbert calling.”

Nate took the phone, listened for a moment, and answered quietly, “Alright. I understand.”

After he hung up, he looked at Felicia.

“I have to go. You should get back to your work.”

“Okay. Take care, Mr. Gilbert.”

The man helped Nate to his feet, and together they walked toward a low-key black sedan parked nearby.

Felicia watched them go, a heavy feeling settling in her chest. He must really be disappointed in her.

She waited until the car drove off before picking up her books. Her legs felt a little stiff from sitting so long, so she stretched and headed toward the administration building.
