Max was always too smart for his own good. Maybe that’s why he seemed a little cold, never really close to anyone, not even his own mother.
When they got home, Miranda picked up her phone and called Max. She brought up the same thing that had everyone talking. “Marian told me Felicia went back to her parents’ place. Is that true?”
Miranda had called earlier just to ask how Felicia was feeling, but Marian immediately started complaining, listing everything Felicia had done wrong. She probably thought Miranda would take her side, just like Max always did. But to everyone’s surprise, Miranda cut her off with a sharp scolding. Marian’s face went pale, and she clammed up right away.
Max pressed his fingers to his forehead, tired already. “She’s an adult. She knows what she’s doing. If she wants to stay at her parents’ house, that’s her business.”
He had already brought up divorce, and Felicia knew where things stood. She didn’t cling or make a scene. In a way, Max respected that she understood the situation.
When Felicia first started working as his assistant, she hid her feelings for him well, but he saw right through her. If she had kept it to herself, he would have given her the recognition she deserved. She really was smart and capable. But she messed up. There were some things she just shouldn’t have done.
First came the unexpected baby. Then the marriage. Those were the only two things in over twenty years that Max hadn’t been able to control, and he hated it.
“She’s pregnant now…” Miranda started to say.
“That’s enough, Grandma. I’m tired. Let’s talk later.” Max hung up before she could respond.

That night, Felicia had dinner with Jeremy and the others. She found out the situation with Brookside Bank was finally settled, but only because they’d made compromises with Max. The bank took a big hit.
Finley didn’t scold his daughter too much. He just told Jeremy to keep an eye on her, then caught a flight back to Northwick.
Darin studied Jeremy for a moment, then nodded and left.
Anthony led Savannah outside, but halfway home, she doubled over with stomach pains and started throwing up uncontrollably. Anthony had no choice but to rush her to the hospital.
Jeremy had just dropped Felicia off at home when his phone rang. It was Anthony.
Felicia looked at him. “What happened to Savannah?”
“She drank too much. Her stomach hurts, but she’ll be fine. I’m going to check on her. You should get some rest.”
“Okay,” Felicia replied softly. She got out of the car and walked toward her building. Her phone started buzzing in her hand. She checked the screen. Miranda was calling.
