Max glanced at the clock in the study. Midnight. For him, that was still too early to call it a night. He picked up his book and read for a bit longer.
After about half an hour, he left the study and headed to the bedroom. The room was completely dark, but there was a soft scent in the air, something that didn’t belong to him. He switched on a warm bedside lamp. The light fell on the bed, where a small figure was curled up on her side, facing the window. On such a huge bed, she looked even more delicate.
Max paused for a second, just watching her, then walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed. He looked at her peaceful face, sound asleep. After a while, he reached out, letting his fingers gently brush a stray lock of hair from her cheek. His gaze lingered on her profile, thoughtful and quiet.
He wasn’t sure how much time passed before he finally got up and walked toward the bathroom.
As soon as he left, the girl who had seemed deeply asleep slowly opened her eyes. Her look was cool, almost distant.
About ten minutes later, the bed sank behind her as he returned, bringing with him the faint trace of his cologne. She was keenly aware of the wide space between them on the mattress. Then the light went out, and the room was swallowed by darkness.
Morning came. Felicia woke up groggy, sensing someone moving beside her. She blinked awake, her view still a little blurry, and saw Max getting out of bed. He noticed she was awake, and in the dim morning light, his voice was soft. “Did I wake you? It’s still early. Go back to sleep.”
Felicia just rolled over and pulled the blanket closer. Max walked to her side, gently tucking her in. “I’m going to get Anne,” he said quietly.
Felicia just murmured a sleepy reply.
Max slipped out and soon came back, carrying Anne in his arms. The little girl had woken up needing the bathroom. “Mommy,” Anne called, scrambling into bed and burrowing into Felicia’s arms, her little head nuzzling close.
Max stood nearby, just watching them. The gentle glow from the lamp made mother and daughter look like something out of a dream, so peaceful and sweet.
