“I’ve got a document from our German office and I was hoping you could take a look at it for me,” Luke said.

Felicia nodded. “Sure, just send it over when you get a chance.”

Luke smiled, picked a shrimp, and dropped it into her bowl. “Thanks, Felicia. I owe you one.”

Rose caught their exchange and looked over. “What is it about, Luke?”

Luke grinned. “Just asking her for a little help.”

Rose gave him a look. “Can’t you see how pregnant she is? Don’t go running her ragged.”

Felicia just smiled gently. “Really, it’s nothing. Just a small favor.”

Rose had always been pretty nice to her, since Felicia wasn’t wrapped up in the family’s business or reputation. Sometimes Rose would even agree with Miranda and say a few kind words in her favor.

“Luke and Felicia really do get along,” Kate remarked. Kate was Daniel’s wife, making her Luke’s sister-in-law.

“They went to the same school,” Rose explained. “The year they graduated, Felicia was the city’s top scorer. Luke was just one point behind her.”

Miranda had found this out during a background check. When Rose heard Felicia’s name, it rang a bell. She remembered being disappointed that her own son missed out on first place by just one point, so the name stuck with her.

Felicia might not have had the looks, but she was smart and capable, the kind of woman who could be a real partner for Max. It was a pity he didn’t see her that way.

But then again, Max was a genius among geniuses. Maybe Felicia’s smarts just didn’t faze him.

Kate smiled in understanding. “Wow, fate is funny sometimes.”

Luke let out a dramatic sigh. “Seriously. Who’d have thought she is now my aunt-in-law?”

Miranda looked over at the group, smiling as she asked, “What’s everyone laughing about?”

After dinner, Brandon called Max into the study.

“Reagan who put the partnership agreement on hold.” Brandon was talking about Nate’s oldest son, Reagan, the mayor of Capital City.

“I talked to him,” Brandon said. “He claims it was Mr. Gilbert’s decision to block your deal.”

Max replied calmly. “The project isn’t getting canceled. Mr. Gilbert is just letting his feelings get the better of him.”

Brandon frowned. He knew Max was right. The partnership had been in the works for six months, and it was a big deal for the company’s funding and future in Capital. There was no way it would just be scrapped out of nowhere. The approval was just being delayed for now. Most likely, Nate just wanted to send Max a warning.
