Miranda spotted them and asked, “All settled?”

Luke nodded. “Yeah, it’s all taken care of. Honestly, we owe it to Felicia. I should really treat her to dinner sometime.”

“You definitely should,” Miranda agreed.

After saying goodbye to the elders, Felicia slipped on her puffy jacket and followed Max outside.

The driver already had the car waiting by the front door.

Max walked ahead, one hand in his pocket, and got in first.

The ground was still wet from the rain. A housekeeper helped Felicia down the steps, steadying her as they made their way to the car. The driver held the door open. Felicia braced herself with one hand on the door and the other on the seat, the housekeeper making sure she got in safely.

Inside, Max kept his eyes glued to his phone, typing out messages to someone, not even glancing her way.

Once Felicia was in, the driver closed the door and the car pulled away from the old house.

The ride was quiet.

Felicia hesitated, turning toward Max. “It’s getting harder for me to get around. I want to stay at my parents’ place for a while.”

Max locked his phone and spoke without looking at her. “You’ll stay at the villa until the baby’s born. Nowhere else.”

Felicia stiffened, her fingers curling into a fist. She knew he didn’t actually want her here.

“Fine, I’ll stay,” she said quietly. “But I want to hire my own nanny.”

Since Miranda had scolded them, Marian and Amaris had been taking care of her meals, laundry, and cleaning, but they never hid their resentment.

Max glanced at her, then said nothing. She took that as a yes.

Felicia let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.

After breakfast, Max left for the day.

Close to noon, Dean drove Ava over to the villa. She arrived with a suitcase and some homemade soup for Felicia’s lunch.

“Ava,” Felicia called out, waiting by the front door.

“It’s freezing out here. Let’s get inside,” Ava said, hurrying in.

Felicia led her to the bedroom. Since Felicia needed help at night, Ava would be sharing the room with her.

It was Ava’s first time at the villa. Felicia’s bedroom was simple and not too big, but it had plenty of sunlight. Ava wasn’t surprised that Felicia and Max didn’t share a room.

Felicia ate lunch at her desk by the window while Ava unpacked.

After eating, Felicia gave Ava a quick tour of the villa, mostly just the first floor.

When they reached the dining room, Marian and Amaris were already there, eating lunch together and acting like the place belonged to them.
