Felicia glanced at her phone without thinking, and when she saw who was calling, her heart tightened. He picked up and said in a cold voice, “Everyone, leave.”

Felicia turned to Ava. “Come on, Ava.” They headed to the bedroom, and as they walked away, Felicia heard his voice shift, suddenly gentle as he answered the call.

On the line, a woman’s voice said, “Max, I miss you so much right now.” Ava’s face fell.

Once they were back in the bedroom, Ava shut the door and tried to keep her frustration in check. “So, he’s not letting you go stay with us.”

Felicia sat down slowly on the edge of the bed. “I doubt Marian or anyone else will try anything for now.”

“For a family with such a big name, he sure isn’t worried about having an affair while his wife is pregnant. If this got out, I don’t know how Max could even show his face.”

Felicia stopped her quickly. “Enough, Ava. I’m used to it.”

If the world found out Max was cheating, it would destroy his reputation, and that was something her family couldn’t risk.

Ava realized she’d gone too far and pulled herself together. “I’ll go get you some warm water for your feet.”

“Thanks.”

Felicia sat by the big window, watching the snow drift through the sky. She wondered if it would still be there in the morning.

A few moments later, she saw a sports car pulling out of the garage. He must be heading to see Andrea. Felicia quietly turned away from the window.

By midday, Jeremy walked Nate to the cafeteria for lunch. Felicia had packed her own lunch, since it was easier for her to eat in her office now.

On the way, Nate and Jeremy ran into Max, the university president, and two other school administrators. They came over to say hello as soon as they spotted Nate. Max greeted him politely. “Mr. Gilbert.”

It was the first time he’d seen Nate in person since that visit to the Gilbert family home. The project proposal had sat on Nate’s desk for three days. Max had met with everyone involved, doing his best to show he was serious, and finally got the approval.

Nate nodded in response. The group walked together to the cafeteria.

Max was here today to talk about his donation for a new academic building. Nate noticed how Max took his role as a business leader seriously and always did his part for the university and the community. But for all his responsibility in public, the way Max acted in his marriage was a total letdown. Nate couldn’t help but feel disappointed in him.
