Felicia quickly knelt and gently gripped Anne's shoulders. "How did Daddy get into a car accident?"
Anne rubbed her red, tear-filled eyes, sobbing softly. "Daddy got into an accident while going to work today. He is in the hospital right now."
"Do not worry, sweetie. Mommy will call him right now and find out what happened," Felicia said gently.
Anne nodded earnestly. Standing up, Felicia walked over to the nightstand, grabbed her phone, and dialed Max's number. It connected almost immediately.
"Hello," came a low, distinctly weak voice.
"What happened to you?" Felicia asked, her tone tight with concern.
"I am dizzy. I have a concussion and I am currently at the hospital," Max replied smoothly.
It did not sound life-threatening. "How did you manage to get into a car accident out of nowhere?" she asked.
"Life is unpredictable. Who can ever foresee what will happen in the next second?"
"If it is nothing serious, you will be fine," Felicia stated calmly.
A faint, mocking chuckle came through the line. "Are you really that heartless?"
Felicia gripped the phone tighter. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Anne staring up at her with a desperate, pleading look in her red-rimmed eyes. It was a sight that made her heart ache helplessly. Exhaling a soft sigh, she said, "Just get some rest for now."
Max murmured a faint note of agreement before she ended the call.
Setting the phone down, Felicia crouched back beside her daughter and wiped away the remaining tears. "Daddy is going to be alright, sweetie. Do not worry."
"But Daddy is all alone in the hospital, and no one is there to keep him company," Anne mumbled miserably.
"I am sure there are people taking very good care of him over there."
"But Daddy definitely wants Mommy to take care of him."
Caught entirely off guard, Felicia struggled to find the right words. "Let's go take a bath first. We can talk about this tomorrow, okay?"
Anne lowered her head and stayed quiet. Watching her daughter's crestfallen face, Felicia felt a familiar wave of helplessness wash over her. She gently took Anne's hand and led her to the bathroom.
"Yes! Daddy, Mommy said she is going to come stay with you!"
Listening to his daughter's excited voice, a triumphant smile curved Max's lips. It seemed he was not the least bit surprised that Felicia had caved. "Is that so? Then Daddy will be eagerly waiting for Mommy to get here."
"Okay! Daddy and Mommy have to be good together. I will stay home and be a good girl while waiting for you both to come back and have your wedding."
"I promise."
Stepping out of the bathroom, Felicia saw Anne sitting cross-legged on the bed. She had caught fragments of the conversation and knew exactly who Anne was talking to. She could only offer a silent, resigned sigh.
"Mommy, hug!" Anne demanded, reaching her arms out wide.
Walking over, Felicia scooped the little girl out of bed. Anne rested her chin on her mother's shoulder, nuzzling affectionately. "Mommy smells so good!"
The two of them enjoyed a few sweet, quiet moments together before the nanny brought breakfast up to the room.
"Are Savannah and the others awake yet?" Felicia asked the nanny.
