Greg pulled the car up to the curb. Colton helped Felicia down the steps, guiding her carefully. When they got to the car, Greg leaned in and scooped Felicia up, carrying her as Ava steadied her, making sure she settled gently into the back seat.

Once the car drove off, the driver finally got back in his own car. He took out his phone and called Max.

“Mr. Hawthorne, your wife has been picked up by her family.”

On the other end, Max sat on the couch, his eyes resting on the sleeping baby in the bassinet. The baby’s tiny hand was curled around his little finger, and Max stayed perfectly still, so he wouldn’t disturb her. The baby was growing and changing every day, getting more beautiful with each passing moment.

Max listened to the driver but didn’t say a word. He just hung up.

At home, Felicia was recovering well with Ava’s care. She could tell that Ava had been running herself ragged for her, with dark circles under her eyes that were impossible to miss. Felicia felt a wave of guilt.

“Ava, you’ve done so much for me lately. Thank you.”

Ava waved her off with a tired smile. “What are you talking about? We’re family. This is just what we do.”

Felicia surprised her by reaching out and hugging her tight, burying her face in Ava’s shoulder. “Mom,” she whispered.

Ava’s eyes filled with tears right away. She stroked Felicia’s hair, her voice breaking. “Oh, Felicia...”

The end of the month was coming up fast and the city was already sparkling with decorations for the new year. Felicia found out that Greg had filed a lawsuit against the people who’d harassed her online. It was news to both Colton and Ava, and suddenly it made sense to them why Felicia had gone into labor so unexpectedly. The more they thought about it, the angrier they got.

Colton let out a string of curses. “Max is a goddamned jerk.”

He usually kept his temper, but this time he just couldn’t hold it in. Part of him wanted to give Max his money back and fight for custody of his granddaughter. All he’d ever done was catch a glimpse of her at the hospital, not even getting to hold her.

But he knew it wasn’t realistic. Even if they returned the money, there was no way they’d get the baby back.

Ava managed to calm him down, keeping her head when everyone else was upset.

Greg updated Felicia. “The lawsuit is going smoothly so far. They’ve already reached out about a settlement. What do you want to do?”

And Max, as always, stayed above everything, completely indifferent.

Greg clenched his fists under the table. For a while, no one said anything.

Felicia was the first to break the silence. “By the way, Greg, how’s your partnership with Luke’s company going?”

Greg brightened a little. “The contract’s signed. We’ll start working together after the holidays.”

Felicia nodded, feeling lighter.

There were only four days left until New Year’s Eve. Ava and Colton started getting everything ready for the celebrations, heading out to the mall, while Greg had to go into the office. Felicia was alone at home.

It was snowing heavily outside, but inside, the house was warm and quiet. Felicia curled up on the sofa with the TV on, then picked up her phone and dialed a number.
