Naylor had been meaning to help Katrina permanently cut ties with her father for a long time, but he had never found the right opportunity.
He never expected that taking a random detour to her law firm after working late would land him front-row seats to this exact scenario.
With Waller practically gift-wrapping his own destruction, how could Naylor not take advantage of it?
In the backseat, Katrina waited until the car had put some distance between them before turning to the man next to her. "What are you doing here?" she asked curiously.
"I was passing by after work. Thought I'd try my luck and see if I'd run into you. Guess my luck's pretty good."
"..." Katrina looked at his warm, smiling face and quietly looked away. "You literally just stood there listening to someone trash your reputation, and you think your luck is good?"
Naylor laughed, looking entirely unfazed. "If a rabid dog bites me, am I supposed to bite it back?"
Rabid dog...
Thinking back on Waller's despicable behavior just moments ago, Katrina realized the description couldn't have been more accurate.
"Besides, after all these years, I've heard every horrible rumor in the book. If I let every little comment get to me, I'd have dropped dead from anger ages ago."
His laid-back, indifferent attitude left Katrina somewhat in awe, but also slightly annoyed.
"Actually, the rumors aren't wrong. You really do have a reputation as a playboy. It's not like he was falsely accusing you," Katrina muttered under her breath, a faint trace of jealousy in her voice.
The moment she brought that up, Naylor looked like a convicted prisoner on death row. He didn't dare say a word in his defense.
He quickly changed the subject. "So... have you eaten yet?"
"Did you skip dinner again?"
"Yeah. Wanna go grab something with me?"
In reality, Naylor had purposely skipped dinner just so he could drag her out to eat. He was terrified she was just going to settle for more takeout or instant ramen.
Katrina vaguely caught onto his scheme, but after thinking it over, she didn't say no.
After all, he had just swooped in and saved her from her father. Treating him to a meal was the least she could do.
"Alright. My treat. Consider it a thank you for stepping in back there," Katrina said.
Naylor beamed with delight. "Perfect. Where are we going?"
"A food truck?"
Katrina said it on purpose. Given Naylor's wealthy upbringing, there was a ninety-nine percent chance he had never eaten at a street food cart or a hole-in-the-wall joint in his life.
But at this time of night, those were the places with the most life.
Naylor hesitated for a second, instantly catching onto her game. He put on a dramatic show of bravado. "Alright. If you're brave enough to eat there, so am I."
The worst that could happen was food poisoning. Both his parents were doctors; he could get treated right at home. What was there to fear?
Seeing him agree, Katrina immediately tapped the back of the driver's seat. "To The University Night Walk."
A night market?
Naylor felt a surge of excitement.
He had assumed they would just grab a quick bite and part ways. He never expected her to pick The University Night Walk. It was over a thirty-minute drive from where they were, which meant they would inevitably end up strolling around the market after dinner.
Tomorrow happened to be Saturday, so they both had the day off.
