On the rare occasions when their family of three actually managed to sit down for dinner, they really did stick to a basic meat and potatoes dinner.

Because both of his parents were doctors, they were incredibly health-conscious. They never ate heavy meals in the evening, preferring simple, light dishes.

But Katrina was a different story! Their precious daughter-in-law had come over specifically to keep them company, and she had just found out she was pregnant—of course she needed extra nutrition! Naturally, they were going to lay out a massive banquet for her.

Unfortunately, they couldn't tell Naylor the real reason yet. They had to keep him in the dark to preserve the surprise for when he returned.

So, Professor Penn rolled her eyes and shot back, "Of course we are. Do you really think you rank anywhere near Katrina? Giving you a basic dinner is already doing you a favor."

Naylor scoffed. "Am I even your biological son? How do I not rank?"

"Do you even treat us like your biological parents? I was just telling Katrina that it's a miracle if you grace us with your presence for dinner once a month. You ungrateful brat."

Naylor defended himself. "Is it my fault I can't come home? You two are always working. We can never get our schedules to line up, so how is this all my fault?"

"If you actually made plans to come over, you think we wouldn't clear our schedules for you? Because you're never around, the only thing we have left to do is bury ourselves in hospital work."

"Okay, okay, okay. No matter what I say, this is somehow entirely my fault." Knowing he could never win an argument against his parents, Naylor threw his hands up in defeat.

Katrina was already well-versed in her husband's dynamic with his parents, but watching them bicker in real time was highly entertaining. She spent the entire exchange stifling her giggles.

After finishing his verbal sparring match with his parents, Naylor brought the focus back to his wife. "So, are you sleeping over there tonight, or heading home later?"

"I'll go home. I didn't bring any spare clothes, and commuting to work from here is a bit far."

As soon as Katrina answered, Professor Penn chimed in. "I'll have the driver take you back later. It's too late for you to be driving yourself."

Even though their son was out of town, his driver was still in the city. The older couple knew the driver well; whenever they needed anything, he was just a phone call away.

"Yeah, let the driver take you. I'll give him a call in a minute," Naylor agreed, fully supporting his mother's plan.

"Alright." Katrina didn't want to play the tough girl and make everyone worry, so she agreed immediately.

With the logistics sorted out, Naylor watched his wife eat. A wave of homesickness washed over him, his eyes locked intensely on the screen.

Katrina held the phone in one hand while expertly navigating her fork with the other, taking another bite.

Noticing him staring intensely at her, Katrina picked up on the vibe and quickly pivoted the conversation. "Have you eaten yet?"

"Yeah, just a quick work dinner. I have an online meeting in a bit."

"You're working so hard. Will you be able to finish up and come back the day after tomorrow?"

"What, do you miss me?" Naylor possessed a thick skin. Even with his parents sitting right there, he shamelessly flirted with his wife.

Katrina, however, flushed bright red. She bit her lip, refusing to answer, and shot him a subtle glare through the screen, completely unsure if he even noticed it.

Professor Penn just laughed. "You two go right ahead and flirt, we don't mind. Just pretend we aren't even here."

Hearing that, Katrina blushed even harder.

Seeing that his wife wasn't going to take the bait, and knowing how easily embarrassed she was, Naylor finally steered the conversation back on track. "I'll be back the day after tomorrow, but I'll have to head straight to the office. I've got a mountain of things waiting for me, but I'll try to get home as early as I can."
