Back in the hallway, the lights seemed glaringly bright after the dim lounge. Danielle clutched the handwritten documents tightly. She carefully tucked them into her briefcase as if she were carrying a burning heart.

All those years of distance and restraint had been a protective web he’d carefully woven for her. By the time she returned to the main hall, the bidding event was on an intermission. People milled about with glasses of champagne, making small talk, the atmosphere lively but strained.

Danielle had just found an empty seat when Harold approached with two flutes, a warm, polite smile on his face. 'Ms. Crawford, where did you disappear to?' he asked, handing her one of the glasses. His tone was casual. 'You looked a little pale. Are you not feeling well? Or perhaps you have some questions about the project?'

Danielle accepted the champagne, the cool glass a steadying presence in her hand. She looked up at Harold. The man was always smiling, always so polished and refined. He never showed any flaws, but that flawlessness was, perhaps, his biggest flaw.

Instead of answering his question, she changed the subject. 'Mr. Chapman, I haven't seen Raffy in a while. How has he been?' A flicker of surprise crossed Harold's eyes before his smile deepened. 'Raffy is doing very well. He's a good boy. He’s brightened up quite a bit since he's been with me and often mentions his little sister Niki, saying he wants to study with her.'
