Suddenly, with a deafening crash, the study door was kicked open.
“Where is Heather?” Jake stormed in, grabbing Alexander’s arm with a brutal grip. “Where did you hide her? Tell me, now!”
The force of the grip sent a sharp pain through Alexander’s arm. Combined with the suffocating pressure in his chest, his face went deathly pale. He wrenched his arm free and leaned heavily against the wall, fighting for breath as he stared coldly at his father. “How did you find this place? Who told you she was with me?”
“It doesn’t matter who told me! All you have to do is tell me where she is!” Jake advanced on him, his eyes wild. “She is a Davidson. Whatever mistakes she made in the past, you have no right to deal with her yourself! Hand her over, or don’t blame me for what happens next!”
Alexander looked at his father’s unhinged state and felt a bitter, cynical laugh rise in his throat. He knew Jake all too well. For years, he had been obsessed with Heather. Now, knowing she was alive, he had lost all sense of reason.
But Heather had betrayed the family, destroyed Academician Gresham, and ruined his mother’s life. How could he possibly let her go?
“I’ll say it one more time: I don’t know where Heather is,” Alexander stated, his voice a low growl. “And even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”
He sneered. “A Davidson? Or the ghost of the Davidsons? I thought she died a long time ago.”
“She’s alive, and you’re the one hiding her!” Jake’s eyes were bloodshot, his control completely gone. “Give her to me!”
Alexander let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “Give her to you? And what exactly do you plan to do with her? You have a wife, Bianca. Even if Heather is alive, if you bring her back to the family, she’ll be nothing more than the other woman, a homewrecker.”
Jake’s face flushed, then paled, but he couldn’t refute the accusation. He knew Alexander was right, but his obsession with Heather was too strong to abandon.
He looked up, his eyes a mixture of pleading and defiance. “Regardless, Heather is the one I care about. I can’t let her suffer in your hands.”
“Give her to me, and I promise I won’t stand in your way ever again. What use is keeping her to yourself?”
Alexander straightened up, his voice turning to ice. “I told you, I don’t know where she is. If you’re so capable, find her yourself. Don’t waste my time.”
