"For instance, has he had any contact with Jake or Nathan Davidson?"

Danielle Crawford frowned, searching her memory before shaking her head. "With Nathan, it was just a business partnership, but maybe it went deeper than that."

They talked as they ate, but after circling the topic for what felt like an eternity, they were no closer to any answers.

Just then, Kirsten Delaney stood up to use the restroom. As she reached the door of their private dining room, she froze, spotting a familiar figure down the hall.

She quickly pulled Danielle back. "Look out there. Isn't that Harold Chapman?"

Danielle followed her gaze and saw Harold at the end of the corridor, dressed in a dark gray suit. He was walking alongside another man, the two of them speaking in low, serious tones. The man with him was Jake.

Danielle's heart leaped into her throat, and she instinctively ducked back behind the doorframe. She never would have imagined that Harold was connected to Jake.

"What are they doing together?" Kirsten whispered, her voice filled with astonishment. "Jake can barely save himself right now. Why would Harold get involved with him?"

Danielle remained silent, her eyes fixed on the two men in the hallway. She watched as Harold clapped Jake on the shoulder, seeming to offer a word of reassurance. Then, they entered a private room at the end of the hall, and a waiter promptly closed the door, cutting them off from view.

Danielle took a deep breath, her heart still hammering against her ribs. She exchanged a look with Kirsten, seeing the same shock and confusion reflected in her friend's eyes. They hadn't been able to figure out Harold's motive before because they'd been looking in the wrong direction. What if his target wasn't Alexander at all? What if he was teaming up with Jake?

Danielle nodded and pressed the call button. The phone rang a few times before the call was abruptly ended.

Her heart tightened. She tried again, but no one answered. Just as she was about to type out a text, a message from Nash Langley popped up: "Miss Crawford, Mr. Davidson is in a meeting with the shareholders and can't take your call right now. If it's urgent, you can tell me, and I will pass it along."

Reading the message, Danielle's anxiety grew. Jake had just held a shareholders' meeting, and now Alexander was in an emergency one of his own. Had he already sensed something was wrong?

She replied to Nash: "Tell Alexander that Harold and Jake are meeting in secret. I saw them together today in a private room at an exclusive restaurant. He needs to be on guard."
