The doctor scheduled my surgery for the afternoon.

It went smoothly, and I spent five days in the hospital recovering.

Once they confirmed I was stable, they discharged me.

In those five days, Liam didn't call me.

Not even once.

When I got home and opened the door, Olivia was the first thing I saw.

"Oh, you're back! Where have you been?"

"Liam was so worried about you."

I ignored her and walked inside, scanning the coffee table. No divorce papers.

Liam emerged from the kitchen, holding a plate of strawberries.

The first thing out of his mouth was irritation.

"You were gone for five days."

"What the hell is your problem?"

"I just came to pick up the divorce papers."

"Did you sign them?"

Olivia stepped closer, her gaze darting between us, pretending to be flustered. 

"Please, don't be like this."

"Liam, you should talk to her, make things right."

Her whole helpless little act made me sick.

Liam set the strawberries down and walked toward me.

"Enough, Charlotte. I've been patient, but this is ridiculous."

"It was just a miscarriage."

"Do you have to drag this out forever?"

"You're the one who broke your promise."

I jabbed my finger against his chest, and for the first time in years, I saw true discomfort on his face.

He hesitated before speaking.

"Fine. If it's a baby you want…"

Liam pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

"Get me the best fertility specialist."

"Charlotte's going to start IVF immediately."

The assistant on the other end hesitated.

"Sir… didn't you know?"

"Know what?" Liam's voice wavered.

"After the miscarriage, the doctors had to remove her uterus… There was no other option."
