Cynthia waved her little hands. “Nope! It’s my uncle’s curfew for me. He said if I stay here too long, it’ll be too tiring for you, Miss Angel.”
She finished her explanation with a pitiful look.
Celestine was taken aback.
She hadn't expected that to be the reason.
“It’s okay. I’ll talk to your uncle in a bit.”
Cynthia’s eyes lit up, but she asked worriedly, “Really? My uncle is so tricky!”
Celestine bit her lip to suppress a laugh. “You shouldn’t say that about your uncle. He’s probably just worried that staying up too late is bad for you. But once in a while is fine. I’ll explain it to him.”
“Yay! That’s great!”
Before Cynthia could celebrate for more than a few seconds, the doorbell rang again.
Celestine opened the door.
Her eyes met Gideon’s.
The man was dressed in a casual white shirt and black pants, looking like he had just showered. His dark hair was still slightly damp, giving him a particularly relaxed air.
“Mr. Prescott?” Celestine said, her mouth slightly agape.
“Sorry to bother you.” Gideon nodded, his gaze sweeping past her to the little figure scrambling to find a hiding spot. “I’m here to take Cynthia home.”
Celestine hadn't expected Gideon to show up right on the dot to collect her.
“Mr. Prescott, it’s still early. You can let her play a little longer. It’s no trouble,” she said, trying to plead Cynthia’s case.
Gideon sighed lightly. “Cynthia’s recent health checkup wasn’t great, and a severe lack of sleep was one of the issues. My grandfather gave specific instructions that she has to be home and in bed at her bedtime.”
Seeing Gideon look so troubled for the first time, Celestine was immediately understanding.
With her consent, Gideon strode into Celestine's apartment.
His gaze briefly flickered to the flowers drying on the balcony before he quickly looked away.
He reached behind the sofa and plucked the little rascal out with one hand.
“Uncle, you’re lying! My checkup was fi—mmph!”
The last few words were muffled by Gideon’s palm, silencing her completely.
Mean uncle! Her health report was perfectly fine! There was nothing about not getting enough sleep!
Cynthia was tucked under Gideon's arm and carried away.
As they passed Celestine, her large, teary eyes looked at her for help.
