Liliana had noticed it a while ago. It was hard to miss, with Amelia often waking up with her eyes all puffy from crying.

Worried she might upset her mother, Amelia would try to comfort Liliana in her own way. “Mommy, Amelia didn’t cry. I just drank too much water last night, so my eyes are a little puffy.”

It was amazing that a child her age even knew what being “puffy” meant. But what a child considers a clever excuse often appears clumsy and full of holes to an adult.

Liliana didn't have the heart to call her out on it. She would just smile and play along, never questioning it, though her heart ached for her daughter.

This was another reason Liliana had agreed to the blind date today. She was genuinely planning to find a father for Amelia.

“Alright, Liam, just stay there and be with your grandfather,” Liliana said as she walked toward the restaurant, still on the phone.

Liam, however, wouldn't back down. He sounded pitiful and hurt. “You didn’t say yes when Aiden Grant pursued you, and you won’t say yes to me, but now you’re running off to a blind date.”

“Honestly, Liliana, what’s the point?”

Liam didn't have the heart to say it outright. Was she really interested in a blind date? She had rejected Aiden, and now she was rejecting him, only to go through the motions of meeting someone new.

The truth was obvious. There was someone in Liliana’s heart she couldn’t let go of, someone she was still waiting for, even knowing she might wait a lifetime.

Liam couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. His voice was sour, as if he’d been chewing on lemons. “You waited until Aiden gave up and got married and moved back to Port Selmar. What now? Are you planning to wait until I give up and marry someone else too?”
