Charlene's immediate reaction was to refuse. "I'm sorry, I—" She did have time, of course. But knowing why he was asking, she felt she had to lie. But before the words could leave her lips, she met York's eyes and paused. She could tell from his knowing smile that he knew she was making an excuse.

York had just returned from his military base yesterday and had contacted Stewart right away. So he knew that Charlene still wasn't divorced. From what Stewart said, it seemed the delay was on her husband's side.

York had wanted to wait until her divorce was final before formally pursuing her, but he never expected that wait to last half a year. And they still weren't divorced...
