Even though my old company went under, my skills hadn't faded.

I had a new company, a new place to live, and a fresh start. Things were heading in the direction I'd expected.

The day I pushed my lawyer to draft the divorce papers, Ashley called, as if nothing had happened.

"When are you coming home? I miss your cooking."

"If you're hungry, just order takeout. If not, let your agent cook for you."

"Are you still mad about that? It was an accident, and I've already reached out to you first. What more do you want?"

I couldn't even bother to respond.

This was her: as long as she reached out first, she expected everything to be forgotten like it never happened.

I snorted. "Ashley, get real. As my wife, you kissed another man in public. What do you think, after that, other than divorce, is left to do?"

"I just think of him like a brother."

"And by the way, I've decided to forgive you for running away from home. Don't be mad, okay?"

Ashley said this so confidently, like it was the perfect solution.

I was starting to wonder if my wife for five years was actually a complete fool.

"Enough. Divorce."

I hung up the phone, and I could hear her laughing on the other end.

"Divorce?"

"Dylan, what are you without me? If it wasn't for my connections, who would care about you?"

"If we divorce, I guarantee you'll regret it. You'll end up broke!"

"When are you going to grow up? When will you stop acting out?"

"Is making Austin's life miserable the way you want me to regret this?"

"Divorce? That's all you think about? You make me sick!"

Ashley's face turned red, the heat of my words hitting her hard. Her phone rang.

"Ashley, remember that thing you asked me to check out about your husband? I got the results."

Ashley shot me a look, her eyes deep.

"What's going on?"

"He had an allergic reaction to alcohol, which caused a shock and led to stomach spasms and ulcers... In the end, he had to have part of his stomach removed."
