He gave her back a reassuring pat. “Are you hungry?”

He figured Lemira had probably not eaten anything at the wedding reception.

Lemira shook her head. “I’m not hungry.”

She had eaten her fill before the event even began.

Orion patted her back again, gentle as ever. “Lemira, don’t dwell on it too much.”

“I know. You don’t have to say anything to comfort me. I just want to be quiet for a while.”

She understood all the logic, but she needed time to settle her emotions.

The words on Orion’s lips remained unspoken.

He held her close, gazing out into the night, watching the lights from thousands of homes fill the city’s darkness.

But now, one of those lights belonged to him.

Orion cradled her for a long time before looking down at her weary face and quietly suggesting, “You should get some rest.”

He lifted her up and carried her straight to the bedroom.

Lemira sat on the edge of the bed. “I need to wash up.”

After washing and slipping into her pajamas, Lemira emerged to find the man standing by the window, his silhouette tall and straight against the city lights.

She walked over to him. “Thank you for always being there for me.”

“No need to thank me. I’ll always be here for you.”

His voice was steady, but it sent a tidal wave through Lemira’s heart.

He stroked her hair softly. “Get some sleep. Don’t overthink it.”

Orion took her hand, watching as she settled into bed, and tucked the covers around her.

Lemira looked up at him, her eyes pleading. She couldn’t stop herself from grabbing his fingers. “Will you stay with me tonight?”

Tonight, she didn’t want to be alone.
