Asher knew he was in the wrong. Unable to stay silent, he finally spoke up. “Lemira, I admit—it was my mistake that led to all of this.”

Lemira snorted. “Well, that’s a rare sight—Asher actually admitting he’s wrong.”

Seeing the mocking look in Lemira’s eyes, Asher forced himself to remain patient. “Just tell me honestly—what happened to the money?”

“It’s been transferred by Evelina’s father. He’s disappeared, and so has your money. As for what to do next, that’s your problem to solve,” Lemira replied, then went straight upstairs, wanting nothing more to do with Asher.

Left alone on the sofa, Asher glanced up at the two black-and-white portraits on the wall. His chest tightened, as if hot oil were churning inside him.

Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined things would turn out this way.

Back in her room, Lemira replayed everything that had just happened. Without hesitation, she texted Orion: Evelina is pregnant.

The more Lemira thought about it, the more absurd it seemed—like something straight out of a soap opera. Of all times, she had to get pregnant now.

Orion’s call came almost immediately. “What’s going on with the Langstons? Is the baby really a Langston?”

Lemira let out a short laugh. Orion’s reaction was just as she’d expected.

“Evelina swears up and down the child is Evander’s, but something just doesn’t add up. They’re already at the hospital getting it checked.”

“So that means they refuse to go to the police because of the baby?” Orion asked.

“You guessed right,” Lemira replied. She then explained Evander’s health issues. “If the baby truly is Evander’s, he’ll stop at nothing to protect Evelina.”

Honestly, even Lemira couldn’t believe just how melodramatic the situation had gotten.
