Evander immediately stepped in front of Evelina to shield her. “Lemira, haven’t you said enough? What happened back then had nothing to do with Eve. And besides, you didn’t even catch her father—you arrested her cousin’s uncle, not her dad.”
Lemira was taken aback. How did Evander find out?
“Evander, shut your mouth!”
As soon as Asher heard this, he snapped at Evander, “How could you say that? How could you say something like that right in front of Evelina?”
Asher was so angry he was shaking.
Evander suddenly realized he’d said too much, and hastily tried to justify himself, sounding guilty: “It’s not like Evelina can leave this place anyway. Even if she knows, there’s no way for her to contact her father.”
Evelina was stunned silent—she had never suspected that Lemira had been lying to her all along!
A spark of hope flickered in Evelina’s heart. If her father was still out there and not caught, he would definitely try everything to rescue her.
Noticing the joy in Evelina’s face, Lemira immediately raised her hand and slapped her hard across the face.
The blow left Evelina reeling. She screamed, “Lemira, what are you doing?”
Lemira’s expression was cold as ice. “Were you just thinking, ‘If my dad’s still out there, he’ll come save me’?”
“I—I wasn’t thinking that! Stop making things up!”
Of course Evelina wouldn’t admit it. Seeing the deadly look in Lemira’s eyes, she quickly clutched her stomach and pretended to be in pain. “Evander, my stomach hurts so bad…”
Evander immediately rushed over. “Lemira, what do you think you’re doing? Are you trying to kill someone here?”
Lemira let out a chilling laugh. “So what if Evelina dies right here? What difference would it make?”
“Are you crazy?!”
The look on Lemira’s face made Evander uneasy. She was nothing like the timid, soft-spoken sister he remembered.
