Lemira stared at her parents' portraits for a moment longer, arranging fresh flowers on the memorial table before turning her cold gaze to Evelina.

"Have you forgotten the rules?" Lemira asked sharply. "Wearing mourning black and paying your daily respects to my parents?"

Evelina's smug smile vanished. "I—I've been doing it."

She only ever bothered when someone was watching. Since no one was strictly policing her, she had been slacking off.

She hadn't expected Lemira to suddenly show up.

One look at that guilty, two-faced expression told Lemira everything she needed to know. "Butler," she called out.

The butler immediately stepped forward, holding a set of black mourning clothes, and placed them directly in front of Evelina.

Evelina balked, taking a step back. "I'm heavily pregnant. I can't stand for long periods of time."

"Then pull up a chair. But you will stay here and apologize for your father's sins."

"My father already turned himself in! What does any of that have to do with me?"

Evelina felt incredibly wronged. She was carrying a child! Couldn't Lemira show even a shred of basic human decency?

Just then, the Langston brothers entered the room.

Seeing Evander, Evelina immediately clutched her swollen stomach and put on her best wounded-animal look.

Evander glanced at the mourning clothes and immediately understood. His voice was flat. "Just do what she says, Evelina. The staff will watch you to make sure you don't hurt yourself."

Evelina choked on her breath. Evander wasn't going to defend her either?

It was infuriating.

Lucian crossed his arms, staring her down. "If you don't want to be thrown out onto the streets to fend for yourself, I suggest you do exactly as you're told."

Realizing she had completely lost her grip over the brothers, Evelina had no choice but to awkwardly change into the black coat and stand before the memorial, seething with silent resentment.

Lemira stood by, watching coldly until Evelina finished her forced, humiliating apology and stepped back. Only then did Lemira turn and take a seat on the sofa.

Evelina, looking utterly wronged, grabbed Evander's hand. "You don't care about me at all anymore."

"If I didn't care about you, you would have been kicked out of this house a long time ago. You're living in luxury. It's a hell of a lot better than hustling drinks at that nightclub."

Ever since the truth about her time at the club came out, Evander's last ounce of pity for her had vanished.
