The next morning, just as the sky was starting to lighten, Jaxon and Jimmy showed up at the hospital. They were still worried about their little brother. But Oliver seemed to have expected them. He was already up and waiting in the small living room outside his suite, an IV still taped to his hand, scrolling through news and checking Pacific Capital’s stock on his phone.

“Is he actually better?” Jaxon and Jimmy glanced at each other in the doorway. Oliver really was as tough as ever. He bounced back as quickly as he got sick. They probably didn’t even need to come.

Oliver locked his phone and looked up. “Pretty much.”

Jaxon laughed. “Mom and Dad nearly had a heart attack when they saw the news. Grandpa didn’t want us to waste a single second. He practically wanted to drop us in by helicopter. And you? Sick for one day and now you’re fine.”

Oliver could hear the teasing in his brother’s voice. He raised an eyebrow. “Sorry for making you guys come all this way?”

“We wouldn’t dare say that. If we complained, you’d just run home and tattle, then we’d never hear the end of it.”

“Honestly, we should’ve snapped a picture of you on your phone just now and sent it to Mom and Dad. You don’t look sick at all. Or maybe you just got sick because your wife’s been ignoring you.”

Oliver rolled his eyes at Jimmy’s sarcasm and leaned back, resting his elbow on the sofa. “Did Sara say something to you?”

Jimmy grinned. “We didn’t say anything. You’re the one acting jumpy.”

“What’s there to say? That you’re too controlling with your wife? That you make her uncomfortable? You’ve always been like this. Since you were a kid, you hated anyone touching your stuff. Even the dog you raised was only allowed to be close to you, not anyone else. You’ve always been stubborn.”

Oliver sat down on the edge of the bed. After pressing his hand for another second, he reached out to her. “Come here, let me hold you.”

Patricia leaned into his arms. “I thought I heard voices this morning. Did someone come by?”

“Jaxon and Jimmy stopped in.”

Patricia sat up straighter, suddenly wide awake. “Are they still here?” She felt a bit embarrassed. Her brothers-in-law had come all this way and she, as their sister-in-law, had just slept through their visit. It didn’t seem right.
