After a quick bathroom break, she crawled back into bed and caught a little more sleep. When she got up again, Jackson had already brought Grandma over. He was hanging out in the kitchen, totally fixated on Marian as she made breakfast, practically drooling over the beef noodle soup bubbling in the pot.

Marian caught him staring and laughed, shaking her head. “You’re lucky, you know. This was supposed to be Sara’s breakfast. She picked it out last night. Now that she’s not here, you get to eat it instead.”

Jackson grinned. “Well, if she’s not going to eat it, it’d just go to waste. I’m doing everyone a favor, really.”

Marian rolled her eyes, but she smiled. “Maybe, but you’re not getting all of it. I’m sure Chelsea wants some too.”

Jackson pretended to be offended. “See, I always knew I wasn’t your favorite.”

Marian shot back, “Well, you’re a boy, aren’t you? If you were a girl, I’d spoil you rotten. When I was younger, I used to get so jealous of families with daughters. I always wanted one myself. But instead…”

Jackson picked up the story, “You ended up with two sons.”

Marian sighed and stirred the noodles with a spoon. “That’s how it turned out.”

She gave a little shrug. “Guess I just wasn’t meant to have a daughter. No point wishing for it now. I’ll just hope for a granddaughter someday. Although, maybe I should move our family’s ancestral grave for better luck. That might guarantee a girl…”

Marian glared at him. “Move the ancestral grave? Why don’t you just suggest I blow it up while you’re at it?”

Jackson grinned. “Well, if you really want to…”

“Go, go, go,” Marian said, shooing him away with a wave. “Go see if the others are awake yet.”

Jackson left the kitchen, whistling his way over to the main house. As he reached the door, he spotted Chelsea helping Patricia down the stairs.

He sighed and explained, “It was Moss, okay? His girlfriend cheated on him, and we just happened to run into her with the other guy while we were out eating with a client. Moss lost it and started a fight. I couldn’t just sit there and let him get beat up, could I?”

He shook his head, thinking back. “Didn’t expect we’d end up at the police station, though. We had to call Colby to bail us out. Makes me kind of miss Brandon, honestly. Life was easier with some connections.”

Patricia raised an eyebrow. “Was the other guy really tougher than Moss?”

Jackson shrugged. “I didn’t really ask. It’s his business, not mine.” He bent down, picked up the fallen blade of grass, and tossed it in the trash.

The three of them chatted as they walked into the dining room. They’d barely sat down when Atticus and Maggie walked in too. It was rare for everyone to be together at Cloud Peak, and even rarer to have breakfast as a group. The house was buzzing with a warm, easy energy.

After breakfast, Atticus headed out for work. Maggie and Grandma went into the nursery and checked everything over again, making note of what they still needed. They also double-checked Patricia’s hospital bag and took another look around the house to make sure everything was in place.
