I took a deep breath. “Finished?”

Jay stepped closer, blocking my path. “What’s the matter, Casey? Did I hit a nerve? You’re such a loser, a pathetic nobody. Your mom must have worked so hard to get you into that fancy school in Oakville. And now, this.”

His mocking laughter was cut short.

A scream, a sharp, piercing sound, sliced through the air. The security guards rushed over, their faces a mixture of confusion and fear.

I was standing over Jay, his head pressed against the ashtray next to the elevator.

“You better shut your mouth before I do something more permanent,” I said, my voice cold and menacing.

It was almost quitting time. The ashtray was overflowing with cigarette butts and ash, along with a few mysterious liquids.

I was taller than Jay. I released him, pushing him back so that his dirty face wouldn’t touch me.

Jay, in shock, wiped his face. He saw the grime on his hands, and his face contorted with rage. He lunged at me. “Casey, I’ll get you!”

He was a spoiled, pampered boy with injuries from our previous altercation. How could he possibly fight me?

I grabbed his arm, twisting it. He fell to the ground, screaming in pain. Then he yelled for an ambulance.

The CEO’s elevator display flickered. I knew Amelia had been notified. I didn’t want to deal with them any longer, so I grabbed my contracts and left the building.

Sunny was waiting for me at the front entrance. She had been there for some time.

“Want a ride?” I asked.

She had a different vibe than the usual corporate types. Her car was filled with childish trinkets, reflecting her bright and youthful personality, just like her smile.

She nodded silently, then pulled out a bottle of disinfectant and some wipes.

“You don’t want to ask me anything?” I asked, a smile playing on my lips.

I could tell she was attracted to me. She had followed me to the office just to invite me to dinner, but she was keeping her feelings in check.

Sunny laughed. “Well, would you tell me? I want to know what’s going on with you and Ms. Amelia.”

Sunny was beautiful, smart, and witty. She had a natural charm that made me feel at ease. I lowered my guard and told her the story of my relationship with Amelia, everything from the beginning to our divorce.

“But we’re divorced now,” I added, my voice softening.

Sunny smiled knowingly. “She’s trying to get you back, isn’t she?”

I remained silent, unwilling to admit it. Amelia’s attempts to win me back were pointless. They felt like a burden, a stain on my heart.

We reached my building, and Sunny walked me to my door.

“Thanks for the ride,” I said. “I hope this doesn’t affect your judgment on the contract.”

Sunny smiled. “Don’t worry. I’m a professional. But…," she leaned in and whispered. “Don’t overthink things. I’ll be waiting for your birthday present.”
