Brinley was trembling with rage.
Before she could say a word, Darleen continued, “Only someone as shameless as you would go after her own brother-in-law.”
“And you didn’t tacitly approve of my interest in Fairfax?”
“You’re just a good actress! Your act was so convincing before, I was completely fooled by your shameless facade!”
Brinley was speechless. Hearing Darleen shift all the blame onto her, she was too furious to even form a word.
Just then, her phone rang. It was the hospital again.
Initially, the hospital had tried contacting Fairfax and Darleen about the baby. But the last time they called, Darleen had been in a foul mood and had cursed them out over the phone. After that, they never called her again. As for Fairfax, he had been so overwhelmed with everything lately that the hospital couldn't reach him at all.
So now, whenever anything concerned the baby, they called Brinley.
Brinley gritted her teeth and answered, “Hello.”
“Mrs. Yelchin, we can’t delay finding Justin any longer. The baby’s condition is very poor.”
Brinley fell silent. *Poor*. The child’s condition had been poor for a while now. To hear the hospital use the word ‘very’ made her heart sink, imagining just how bad it must be.
“I know. We’re trying our best,” Brinley said, her voice tight with suffocation. They had been trying their best for a while, but what else could they do? She was at her wit's end, and the stress over the baby was driving her mad.
After a few more brief words with the hospital, Brinley hung up.
Darleen snorted. “Didn’t you used to have such a capable mother? What happened? Can’t rely on her this time?” She was referring to Harriet. Back when Harriet was influential, Darleen had tolerated her for the benefits she brought. Deep down, however, she had always looked down on people like her.
