“Aren’t you worried they’ll team up and plot against you?”

“They’ll never get on the same page,” Starla said. “And they don’t have the energy for it.”

“True,” Tanya agreed. After fighting all day and night, they wouldn't have the stamina to conspire against Starla. It would be giving them too much credit to think they could unite. They were all too self-serving to think that far ahead.

Of them all, only Sally, Harriet’s long-time aide, might possess the cunning for such a plan. But the old woman was exhausted from the past few days of dealing with Brinley. She was probably simmering with her own resentment, and given Brinley’s current attitude towards her, Sally likely wouldn't lift a finger to help, even if she did have a plan. Brinley wasn't treating her like a human being at this point.

Upstairs, Starla and Tanya talked late into the night, finally drifting off after eleven. Downstairs in the basement, the conflict was far from over.

Darleen couldn't sleep. She would find any excuse to attack Brinley. After a grueling day of labor, she and Xenia would normally have been asleep hours ago. But tonight, sharing a room with Brinley, she was consumed by rage. Every time she looked at Brinley, she saw the woman who, along with Felix, had caused Faraday's death. She saw the mother of a child that wasn't a Yelchin. These thoughts stoked the fire of her anger, and that anger needed an outlet.

And so, Brinley was beaten again in the dead of night.
