“Jordan, I need your help. You have to erase everything, make sure the police never connect it to me. And you need to find a way to stop Ethan from digging any deeper.”
“If Ethan would just let this go, Isabella’s death would turn into a cold case. I’d be in the clear.”
Jordan let out a frustrated sigh, his voice heavy with mixed anger and helplessness. “Natalie, honestly, what do you want me to do? I don’t even know where to start.”
“Ethan’s a wreck because Isabella’s gone. He really cared about her. You saw it. You know it.” He paused, searching her face for any sign of regret.
“That’s why she had to go,” Natalie replied, her voice clipped and cold. “If Isabella was alive, she would have taken Ethan from me.”
Ethan could only love her, only spoil her... that was all that mattered.
Jordan shook his head, clearly overwhelmed. “Ethan’s never going to stop searching for the truth. Not unless he dies, too. But he’s the head of the Adams family. If anything ever happened to him, the family would launch an investigation and never let it go.”
He rubbed his temples, feeling a headache starting. “Dealing with everyone else is one thing, but Ethan? Don’t tell me you want to kill him next. What, take out the entire Adams family, too?”
Could she really go that far? He wasn’t sure anymore.
Natalie didn’t answer. The silence in the room stretched, heavy and tense.
Jordan paced back and forth for a minute, then finally headed to the mini-bar. He poured himself a generous drink, his hands trembling just a little.
Natalie was his wife. He’d promised to protect her, no matter what. There was no way he could just watch as she went to jail. If she was caught, the Lane family would be ruined, too.
The only other option would be to turn her in himself, or try to convince her to surrender... maybe that could save their family. But as he watched her across the room, all he saw was the woman he’d grown up with, the woman he loved—someone who’d always put the Lane family first, even if it meant doing terrible things.
Sending her away, letting her face death... he just couldn’t do it.
