The car ride was quiet. Isabella stared out the window, lost in her own thoughts. Harold kept glancing over at her, worried, but he didn’t ask anything. He knew her well enough to wait. When she was ready, she’d talk. If he pushed, she’d just shut down.

After they landed in Cabinda, Harold picked up his car at the airport where they’d left it before their rushed trip to see Ethan. They slid into the seats, the city sunlight streaming in through the windshield.

A few minutes later, Isabella finally spoke up. “Harold, do you think people can come back after they die? Like, actually be reborn?”

Her question caught him off guard. He thought for a moment before answering. “Honestly, I think when someone dies, that’s it. Life just flickers out. No one can prove that reincarnation is real. By the time you die, you can’t exactly come back and tell people what happens next. So, I guess it’s just something no one can truly know.”

He glanced over at Isabella, making sure she was listening. “That’s why I think we should really cherish the life we have, and everything and everyone in it. Don’t waste time hoping for a second chance after this is all over.”

He paused, letting his words sink in. “If rebirth was real, who would be afraid of dying? But look at the world. People die, and they’re just gone. No one comes back. That whole idea is for stories and novels, to make things exciting, but it’s not reality.”
