She knew that even if she went to Deborah, the best she could hope for was a little cash for a bus ticket home or maybe Deborah would help her book a hotel or rent a small room while she searched for a job. There was no way Deborah would let her stay in her house. Deborah was always on guard, worried that Mandy might try to catch Jackson’s eye. That was just how Deborah was, and Mandy understood her cousin’s personality inside out.
If Mandy had gone straight to Deborah, she was sure Deborah would have turned her away. After all, Mandy did look a bit like her, only younger and prettier. Now that Jackson and Deborah were always together, acting like husband and wife, there was no chance Deborah would risk having Mandy around.
So Mandy went directly to Jackson instead. He was divorced now, single, and had no family responsibilities. Faced with a beautiful young woman asking for help, how could he say no? This was the only way Mandy could get a foot in the door at Deborah’s place, and maybe even have a shot at stealing Jackson’s heart.
The two receptionists shared a look. Deborah came to the office a lot these days, and they’d seen how Jackson treated her. Deborah could easily become the next Mrs. Lane, and they knew better than to cross her.
“You’re Deborah’s sister? Alright, we’ll call to see if Mr. Lane wants to meet you.”
Not wanting to get on Deborah’s bad side, the two finally agreed to help Mandy and called Jackson’s secretary, Candida.
Candida checked with Jackson, and once he gave the go-ahead, she told the front desk to let Mandy in.
It was Mandy’s first time in such a big company, and she felt a little out of her depth. All that confidence from earlier had faded. She’d only put on that attitude to make sure the receptionists would announce her.
Candida just smiled, then led Mandy to the office door. She gave her a few quick pointers, knocked, and after getting Jackson’s permission, opened the door and spoke to him quietly before inviting Mandy inside.
Jackson was busy. If Mandy hadn’t said she was Deborah’s cousin, he probably wouldn’t have seen her at all.
As Mandy stepped into the office, she couldn’t help but stare. The place was huge, way bigger than her living room back home, and the decor was so fancy. She thought to herself, rich people really do live in another world.
