“Don’t worry about it. Honestly, I just wanted to see the drama, too. I never liked Jordan and Natalie, but I couldn’t really say much in front of Ethan. He always took their side. He knows exactly what kind of people they are, but he chooses them anyway. In his eyes, Jesse and I could never compare to Jordan and Natalie.”

Isabella took a long sip of water.

“They’ve known each other since they were kids. Almost thirty years together… there’s no way an outsider like me could ever compete with that. The second Natalie’s involved, Ethan just loses it. His sense of right and wrong disappears. He’d do anything for her. Honestly, he would go through hell and back if she asked.” Isabella let out a quiet, self-mocking laugh. “He would even hurt a girl who loved him with everything she had, just for a chance to see Natalie.”

The truth was, she had loved Ethan with her whole heart.

Just then, her phone rang. Ethan’s name flashed across the screen. Isabella wanted to ignore him, but he kept calling, three times in a row, before she finally picked up.

“What do you want?” Her voice was flat, cold.

Ethan was waiting outside her office, feeling a knot of worry at her icy tone. Afraid she would hang up, he rushed to say, “Isabella, are you off work? I’m waiting for you downstairs. Grandma called, she wants us to have dinner with her. She even asked the kitchen to make all your favorite dishes. She told me to make sure you come home tonight.”

Ethan knew Isabella still respected his grandmother. He was hoping that mentioning her would convince Isabella to come back.

“I’m busy. Tell Stephanie I won’t be her granddaughter-in-law for much longer. She doesn’t need to invite me to dinner anymore. Ethan, the waiting period is over next Thursday. I hope you’ll keep your word.”

“So what if we’re having dinner? Friends get together to eat and have a drink sometimes. That’s normal. Ethan, we’re divorced. My life is my own now. You don’t get to control me anymore. If you have nothing else to say, I’m hanging up.”

Isabella didn’t want to argue with him at all. When he used to have dinner, go shopping, or take trips with Natalie, had she ever said a word? Back then, they were still married. Throughout their marriage, he ignored her, never caring how she felt. Now, they were almost officially divorced. In just a week, the papers would be final, and they’d be nothing to each other. Yet he was still trying to meddle in her life.

Ethan was fuming as she hung up. Right now, they were just having dinner, but how long before they started holding hands, hugging, kissing, and doing everything that couples do? He and Isabella had been together for over six months, from dating to marriage, and he hadn’t even slept with her yet.

Isabella was his.
