"Isabella, you really do look like an angel," Susan said with a warm smile.
Isabella just laughed. "I'm only a little above average, that's all. Susan, is Ethan waiting at the gate?"
Susan wouldn’t have come to interrupt her if Ethan wasn’t outside. Even though Susan was on Isabella’s payroll these days, her heart was still with Ethan. Isabella understood. She didn’t hold it against her.
Susan had practically raised Ethan. When he moved out and bought his own place, Susan went along to be his housekeeper. She had always been loyal, so it made sense she’d take his side.
In her past life, Susan had never respected her, and Isabella had been afraid of her. It was all because Ethan hadn’t treated her well. If Ethan had given her even a little bit of respect, none of the staff, including Susan, would have dared to look down on her. Back then, she had lived so miserably. Even the servants thought they could treat her badly.
"Ethan said he’s going to the banquet too," Susan said. "Since it’s on the way, he wanted to wait and go with you."
Isabella didn’t reply.
Susan glanced at her, reading her expression, but in the end decided not to stick up for Ethan. After a moment, Isabella picked up her handbag.
"Susan, I’m heading out. I might be back late tonight. Just leave the door unlocked for me. No need to wait up."
"That’s no trouble," Susan replied. "I live here now, so I can get up whenever you come back. Isabella, try not to drink too much tonight. And if Ethan keeps drinking, maybe you could say something to him."
As Isabella walked out, she said, "That’s his business, not mine. I can’t control him, and it’s not my place to try."
Susan let out a silent sigh and followed Isabella, chatting about other things and dropping the subject of Ethan altogether. Isabella clearly didn’t want to hear it.
Isabella didn’t drive herself. She was wearing high heels, and it just wasn’t convenient. One of her bodyguards took the wheel instead.
