Isabella slipped outside for her usual morning run.
She had barely stepped out of the main house when Susan hurried after her, calling out, “Isabella, Stephanie and Ethan are at the gate. They rang the bell. Should I let them in?”
“This early?” Isabella raised her brows.
She said, “Let them in and ask them to wait inside. I’ll be back after my run.”
Harold had stepped in for her last night and helped her out of a tight spot. Otherwise, who knew how long Ethan would have kept pestering her? But Stephanie was Ethan’s grandmother. Her heart would always side with him.
Of course, Ethan was using that to his advantage, showing up at the crack of dawn with Stephanie just to get inside. He knew Isabella respected Stephanie and would never leave her waiting outside.
Susan nodded. “Alright, since they’re here so early, they probably haven’t had breakfast yet. Should I make them something?”
It was still early. Susan hadn’t even started on Isabella’s breakfast.
Isabella’s eyes flashed with resignation. “Go ahead and prepare something. Stephanie’s here, so we should at least offer her breakfast.”
With that, Isabella headed off for her run, and Susan went to open the gate for Stephanie and Ethan.
Ethan and Stephanie had been standing at the gate for a while.
Ethan shifted restlessly. “Grandma, do you think Isabella will even let us in? She treats me like I’m some kind of monster. If I wasn’t so persistent and shameless, we could live next door and never see each other all year.”
Everyone was busy with work, always coming and going. If you didn’t go out of your way, it was easy to go months without running into your neighbors.
Stephanie gave him a side-eye, her tone dry. “So at least you’re aware you’re being shameless.”
Ethan’s face turned red. “You have to be shameless if you want to win your wife back.”
Stephanie just shook her head, half amused and half exasperated.
