Jennifer sat hunched over, her quiet sobs filling the silence. Any mother would crumble after getting news like this. They’d said Jennifer collapsed as soon as she heard, completely fainting where she stood. It took someone pinching her hard to bring her back. After she woke up, the tears wouldn’t stop, no matter what anyone said. When Stephanie caught up with her back at the Adams Estate, she had to shake her out of it just to get her to breathe a little.
Now, the tears started again. Walter whispered soothing words, rubbing her back. Isabella watched Jennifer closely, noticing how she suddenly looked years older, even though it had only been hours since the nightmare began. Isabella looked over at Harold and he took the cue, moving up to gently comfort Jennifer.
“Try to get some rest, Isabella,” Harold said quietly. “We’ll let you know when we get there. The hospital might need someone young to stay through the night.”
Isabella nodded. “You too, Steph. Try to close your eyes for a bit. I just know Ethan’s going to pull through. I can feel it.”
Stephanie managed a weary nod, not trusting herself to say anything else. Silence fell over the car, making the air feel even heavier. Everyone was too lost in their own thoughts to try to break it.
Isabella leaned back in her seat, staring at the shifting clouds outside. In her mind, she whispered words she was almost afraid to say aloud. Ethan, you have to hold on. Don’t do this to your parents. Don't make them go through this pain.
Ethan really had been hurt badly. By the time they got him to the hospital, he’d gone into shock. The doctors worked fast, and eventually, he was stable enough to move out of surgery and into the ICU. Family wasn’t allowed in. They just had to wait.
When they arrived at the hospital, Isabella watched Stephanie press her face to the little glass window in the ICU door, staring at Ethan’s pale form, tubes everywhere. Stephanie turned and whispered to one of the bodyguards standing by.
The bodyguard spoke softly. “The doctor says Ethan’s still in critical condition. He’s got to stay in the ICU for at least a few days. If he wakes up, it means he's out of immediate danger and they’ll move him to a regular room.”
Stephanie’s voice sounded small. “And if he doesn’t wake up?”
