Chapter 1798: Warmth in the Cold (Part 2)

The strongest among them was level 15, but thankfully, it was enough due to Alterra’s (and neighbors’) consistent effort to clear the surroundings of high-level monsters (high-level people specifically hunt for monsters that could give them experience).

Not to mention, the well-made roads made their journey smoother just by being there.

Sadly, their timing of arrival sucked, and when their territories received the news of the cold, they were outside the territories and did not receive the announcements.

Not everyone had the money to send messages to residents outside the territory, after all, so many Lords (especially village lords) had never actually used this feature. Most Lords would just post bulletins or make announcements to newer entries to echo whatever was announced when they were outside.

This was why some poor groups were wholly unaware of what had been brewing. They were lucky the camp of enemy advanced forces was elsewhere, too, otherwise they could’ve even been unwitting hostages.

The entrance to the territory, after the war declaration, was quite strict in allowing entry, so they were held back a lot as well.

By the time they settled down in a motel, the war had already begun, and they were unable to stockpile well. What they had bought during that day was consumed in a few days, so they had to head out.

They still overestimated themselves and found themselves in trouble, especially when the hail dropped.

They were saved by a stationed guard then, though they had to awkwardly squeeze inside the small guard house...

Hey, the guard at the time was Amos, and the other team was a girl around his age. She developed a major crush on him because of this incident (he was so warm, she said), though he was unaware of it for a long time.

This was a story for later, of course.

Others were luckier if they encountered a guardhouse equipped with a Heating Umbrella, too, because its area of warmth was larger.

During this time, Althea had also created the heating umbrella (she had a lot of time to experiment indoors now) based on the array she learned before.

At first glance, it looked a lot like the heating slabs, but with differences. Basically, this one was like an umbrella that would radiate heat downwards in a rounded cone shape, like the light rays emitted by downlights. It was a bit heavy because it was a stone slab, but people who frequent outside were generally strong enough to walk around with it like a flat umbrella.

There were only a few, and she gave them to the guard station where people could borrow them for a fee. For example, if they wanted to head somewhere and their heating materials were not enough.

They had to warn people not to use them on thick snow in case the snow melted and refroze rapidly, and they would just create ice instead. Fortunately, the roads were always cleared, and no more than a foot of snow would pile up there, so the umbrellas were very useful.

A lot of the renters still used it to warm snow around their houses, because clearing it manually was really a hassle, and walking around with this thing definitely made life easier.

While having ambient heat might only turn the snow to ice, if they cleared their outdoors often enough, the inefficiencies would not happen.

Anyway, the umbrellas’ rental fees were not low, and they would actually cover the cost of making one within the next two weeks.
