I stare at Sadie lying on the bed.

It’s been five days since she collapsed, and she hasn’t woken up, not even once.

The doctors have examined her over and over, running every test they can think of. Nothing. No injuries. No internal damage. Every result comes back clean, as if there’s nothing wrong with her at all. No one knows what happened. No one knows why she fainted. No one knows when or if she’ll wake up.

But I have my suspicions. I think it was Lola. I’m almost certain she carries Xena’s spirit, just like Sadie carries Nyx. And seeing her must have triggered something inside Sadie. Maybe the bond between Nyx and Xena stirred too violently. Maybe Sadie’s mind couldn’t handle it, and the only way to survive was to shut itself down.

I’ve tried every spell I know to wake her. Every incantation, every ritual, even the forbidden ones. Nothing has worked. Not even the most powerful magic responds to her.

I let out a slow breath. “Come on, Sadie,” I murmur. “Wake up, please.”

Just like every other time, there’s no response.

Alec tried too. He pushed through the mate bond, desperate to reach her, but even that failed him. He’s been here every single day, barely leaving her side. The only reason he isn’t here now is because the other leaders called for an emergency meeting. Hybrid attacks have increased. Too many to be random.

We’re certain it’s Lola preparing for war. The hybrids are meant to weaken us, to stretch us thin, and to keep our attention divided while she prepares to release Kaden.

I feel it deep in my bones. The day we’ve been dreading is close and without Sadie, we won’t stand a chance.

If Sadie’s power is anything to measure by, then Lola must already be terrifyingly strong.

Maybe that was her plan all along. Come to the pack. Create chaos. Turn Sadie and Alec against each other then reveal herself, knowing exactly what it would do to Sadie.

It would have affected me too to discover that the woman who caused me so much pain three years ago is also the evil twin sister of my wolf… that would break me.

Sighing for what feels like the hundredth time, I push those thoughts away just as the door creaks open.

I turn to see Piper stepping into the room.

“Still nothing?” she asks quietly, moving fully inside.

I shake my head, my gaze drifting back to Sadie.

We stand there in silence for a few seconds before Piper speaks again.

“Oh, by the way, someone’s looking for you.”
