Sadie.

“How?” Micah asks. “I’d understand if you were Nyx’s mother but Sadie just called you mom.”

“I think it’s time I explained a few things,” I say quietly. “This isn’t something you’ll find in your texts. But it isn’t uncommon for gods and goddesses to have children. They simply never leave the heavens; that’s why it isn’t common knowledge.”

I take a breath before continuing.

“Years ago, the Moon Goddess gave birth to twins. Two girls. Complete opposites—just as fate intended. One was light. The other, darkness. They were meant to rule together, to balance and complete each other. One would govern the moon itself, while the other would rule the darkness that surrounds it.”

“Nyx and Xena,” Piper whispers.

“Yes,” Mother says softly. “They are my children. My two girls.”

“You must know about Lola,” Raven says slowly. “So does that mean Sadie and Lola carry your daughters’ spirits?”

“Not exactly,” I answer. “In the heavenly realm, we exist as spirit and consciousness. Only when one crosses into the physical realm does a body become necessary. A vessel capable of carrying that spirit.”

I lift my gaze, letting the truth settle before I say it.

“I am Nyx. And Lola is Xena.”

Silence crashes over the room.

“The laws of the physical realm don’t allow us to exist without bodies,” Piper says calmly. “In the heavens, existence is mind and spirit. Here, it’s mind, body, and spirit. To walk this earth, a physical form is required. Nyx didn’t enter Sadie.”

She turns to me. “That means you aren’t separate from Nyx. You aren’t a wolf blessed by her spirit. You are Nyx just in physical form.”

“But as we grew older, I started to notice changes in her. She became cruel. She’d hurt me, belittle me, and call me weak and useless, but then she’d apologize, and I’d forgive her, because she was my sister.”

My voice hardens slightly.

“The older we got, the worse it became. Nothing I ever did was good enough. She always found a way to tear me down. By the time we were sixteen, we’d grown so distant we barely spoke to each other anymore.”

I remember how deeply it broke me. I loved Xena. She was my twin, but her toxicity became unbearable, and eventually, I couldn’t stay near her without losing pieces of myself.

“It’s my fault,” Mother says quietly. “I noticed the changes, but I dismissed it as normal teenage conflict. I thought they would grow out of it.”

I shake my head. “I never blamed anyone but Xena. I held onto hope that things would improve but they only got worse."
