“What about the hybrids?” Jason asks.

“When Absalom and Hecate distracted Xena,” Mother continues, “She managed to kill Absalom, absorb his powers, and take his scepter... A scepter isn’t just a symbol of authority; it’s a source of immense power. I’m sure you’ve all seen Nyx wield hers.”

They nod in unison.

“With my scepter and Absalom’s in her possession, Xena can easily create hybrids,” Mother explains. “All she has to do is fuse a vampire spirit into a wolf’s body and just like that, you have a hybrid.”

That sends a chill through the room.

“Hecate went into hiding,” Mother adds, “just like most of the gods and goddesses who survived the war. When peace finally returns, we’ll appoint a new Vampire God.”

A pause follows, then Raven speaks, her curiosity unmistakable. “Who is Sadie and Lola’s father?”

Mother exhales slowly, as if bracing herself.

“I’ve always been curious about Earth,” she begins. “So I decided to visit. I knew I couldn’t stay long so I planned to stay for two days and then return to my realm. On my first day, I came across a group of humans who had been badly wounded from a vampire attack. I felt pity for them and so I healed them.”

I lean forward without realizing it. This is the first time Mother has ever spoken about our father. Every attempt to ask before had led nowhere.

“Absalom’s creations were becoming increasingly uncontrollable,” she continues. “I knew the attacks could happen again, so I gave those humans a gift, something to help them protect themselves, only I didn’t know that gift would change them forever.”

She smiles faintly, lost in memory.

“I stayed with them for those two days. By then, they realized I wasn’t human and I realized what I’d done. They were stronger. Faster. They healed rapidly. And then they began to shift into wolves. That was the birth of the first werewolves,” Mother says. “And that is how I became Goddess not only of the Moon but of werewolves as well.”

A quiet awe settles over the room.

"After returning to my realm, I couldn’t let them go. I kept thinking about the beings I’d created,” she admits. “So I returned often to watch over them, to make sure there were no unintended consequences.”
