I walk beside Mother.

Her presence hums through the air, silver light brushing the forest floor as though the world itself is holding its breath. Every step I take feels heavier than the last, not from exhaustion, but from anticipation.

I’ve waited for this moment. I’ve dreamed of it. Replayed it in my mind a thousand times, ending them, finally putting a stop to the pain they caused, to the lives they destroyed. A sharp thrill coils tight in my chest, dangerous and alive... And yet fear weaves through it, because a part of me is afraid of losing like last time.

I swallow hard and glance sideways at my mother.

“Are you sure?” I ask quietly. “That you remember where you imprisoned him?”

She doesn’t even look at me. Instead, she clicks her tongue softly, amused.

“Seriously, Nyx,” she says, her voice smooth and infinitely patient. “I am the Moon Goddess.”

Behind us, someone, Jason, I think, lets out a low chuckle. Even Raven exhales, the tension easing just a fraction.

I nod, chastened, and fall silent. Of course she would know. There’s no freaking way she would ever forget something like that.

We walk for what feels like hours, pushing deeper and deeper into unfamiliar territory and that alone sets me on edge.

I know this land. I know every inch of Alec’s pack like the back of my hand—every ridge and every clearing yet this place feels different. I don't recognize this place at all.

The air feels wrong. Too still. Too quiet. Even the earth beneath my boots feels reluctant, as if it doesn’t want us here. My instincts itch, a low, warning hum thrumming through my bones.

Then Mother stops and so do we.

I frown, slowly turning in a circle, scanning our surroundings. Nothing remarkable. Nothing that even hints at a structure, let alone a prison capable of holding someone like Kaden.

“This is it?” I ask, disbelief sharpening my voice. “There’s nothing here.”

My mother doesn’t answer right away. She inhales slowly as though drawing breath from the world itself. Then she lifts her hand and the air ripples.

Not wind. Not magic as I know it. Reality itself shudders, the space before us bending, folding inward like fabric being pulled apart at the seams. My skin prickles as something ancient slides into place, and then it appears.

Stone and iron rise where emptiness stood moments ago, towering and oppressive. A fortress of raw, merciless architecture. Runes carved deep into its walls pulse faintly, glowing as though they’re alive.
