We were outnumbered, and I already felt the bond break with my Gamma. Rex howled in regret and anger before getting back at them with a vengeance. His strength was unquestionable, but he was only one and couldn't dodge their spells for too long while half of them were in their wolf form and fighting.
I had driven on this road alone at least a dozen times after Leah died, and no one ever dared to even come into my sight, too scared I would mistake them for a Rogue. And today, they lured Finn in by pretending to be a Rogue while I was too busy arguing with Rex.
He cried out in pain, more from the thought of Nyla losing her mate than from the excruciating wounds and spells. I had already linked my dad to come to my rescue soon, but they were an hour away and darkness was racing to meet me first. Rex wasn't responding anymore, and I was forced to shift back to kill the last of the attackers.
I couldn't afford to lose Rex, couldn't imagine Nyla feeling the pain again if I died. Didn't even say goodbye to her properly before leaving. Not sure for how long I apologized to her in advance in case I died, but the next thing I felt was her soft breathing against my neck.
I was in my room in a groggy state, still with no Rex. Nyla was holding me in her arms and kissing me.
This was surely a dream because she hated me enough to never kiss me.

When dad said he could smell a woman on me, I knew for sure it was her and not just a dream. My spitfire of a mate actually kissed me and held onto me when she thought I wouldn't know.
My mouth twitched into a grin, thinking about how heavenly those kisses felt. Meanwhile, my dad was grilling me like I was some captive in the dungeons. He was pushing my patience to the farthest limit.
To make it worse, my mind was wandering off, and I even thought I caught a whiff of rain and raspberries. It was growing stronger by the minute until Nyla stopped about two feet away from the conference room entrance.
What the hell was she thinking? She would have been in so much trouble if someone had caught her sneaking into my room at night. My dad may not be the Alpha of the pack any longer, but he was still Alpha with a stronger sense of smell than Ryder and the others.
If not for being swamped with work in my absence, I'm sure he would have traced the scent to her room and gotten rid of her while I was still out. If Ryder had watched her sneak in, he would have blamed her for trying to harm me.
She was definitely acting like Rex, on an impulse, by throwing all caution out of the window.
I barely saw her for a split second without catching my dad's eye. Unable to focus on his words anymore, now that I caught a glimpse of her, I exploded at my dad to make him stop.
I didn't know what Rachel was talking about "...so it's okay. We can go when you feel completely better."
Ah, yes! A muscle car for this little hamster.
I linked Ren to make sure Nyla's scent was cleaned off the stairs and hallways.
'Stop being so paranoid. Your dad already thinks it's one of the women you fucked in the past. You know he never walks by that hallway leading to the balcony. We chose that location for a reason.'
I ignored him and continued talking to Ren.
"Make sure she stays with her baby in her room for a few days. No trips to the wet nurse either. I'll tell Eric the same."
