The female clenched her fists before walking off, unable to decide.
Maybe she was hesitant due to her lack of experience with romantic feelings, but if the marriage has benefits, she would not decline.
Deep in her thoughts, Wu Xingxie managed to feel another presence behind her. She was taking a rather isolated passage so not many people would be around. Due to the incident with the masked man, her guard was up and she teleported a few meters away, now facing the figure.
Her lips frowned seeing as it was only Wei.
"What are you doing?" She questioned the man. Wei purely smiled at her obvious question.
"I'm your bodyguard, it's my job to look after you, Wu Xingxie." He was smiling, but there was something off about him. Wu Xingxie couldn't exactly tell what it was but his eyes seemed much more...
Sinister. Yes, the way he looked at her was rather ominous, causing Wu Xingxie to immediately draw her sword.
Something was wrong here.
"You're not Wei. He never calls me by my name." Wu Xingxie was able to deduce because throughout her conversations with him, he always addressed her as Eldest Miss. He wouldn't call her by her name as she never told him to, so for this person to call her by name, they had to be someone disguised as him.
Simultaneously, the real Wei was in distraught over the message he received. A messenger bird belonging to one of his juniors arrived to pass on a message. It explained everything that happened in the palace, but he was to act as if he had no knowledge of it should Wu Xingxie ask her if he knew who was behind the incident.
After all, they were not the only ones involved in this matter.
The man sighed, rubbing his temples from all the schemes. He only wanted to stay by the Eldest Miss's side until his mission was complete.
With the thought, Wei stood up from his seat, picked up his sword and prepared to leave his spot when he sensed a dark aura. He couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from but he did recognize Wu Xingxie's Qi nearby.
Not wasting another second, he rushed over to where it came from, but stopped in his tracks.
What he saw was eerie as he noticed the person disguised as him battling Wu Xingxie. It was even more relatively odd for whoever it was managed to imitate his fighting style almost perfectly to the point that Wu Xingxie had a disadvantage.
Wei had heard of this technique but never thought it would be used with his abilities.
Gripping his sword, he joined the battle by slashing the fake, who had been occupied with attacking Wu Xingxie.
"Guard Wei!" Wu Xingxie recognized him as the real one, at the same time blocking the fake's blow. The fake Wei had tremendous strength, but he was too caught up to notice someone else in the area.
Only when Wei peirced his sword through his heart did the spell break, revealing a man who Wu Xingxie knew too well. With black clothes that most assassins wore and a black mask covering the bottom half of his face, she knew who it was.
"You..." Back in Qinghai, she encountered one of the assassins who were involved in the future. This one was the one who stabbed her in the heart, pushing her off the cliff.
Right now, he stood before her, smirking even with a sword through his heart.
"Remember me?" He grinned, hinting that he already knew who she was.
"Let's return." She told him and the two began heading back, not dropping their guards for even a second.
Ever since the execution of the Minister of Works, the capital city fell into a state of ambiguity. More crimes were committed, and despite the investigations, the criminals were never caught.
Some say that the fall of the empire was coming, while others saw it as a purge.
The emperor tried to dispel the rumors by using prisoners as a scapegoat. He forced them to act as the culprits of the growing crimes in order to fool the people which eventually worked and the rumors died away, but not everyone was easily swayed.
"Using captives from past wars to hide the truth, this emperor sure is bold, don't you think?" A certain white haired male questioned another man who also had white haired, but was older as he had wrinkles on his face.
The older man had his eyes closed, in a state of relaxation. Hearing the statement, his orbs shot open, glaring at what was before him.
"Young man, what are you implying?" With a firm tone, the old man asked.
"Wise Elder, I'm sure you know about the state the empire is in. As a protector of the continent, are you just going to allow a meaningless war to happen again?"
Hu Jiaiyi kept his tone modest, not wanting to offend the elderly man who he had been searching for.
"Young man, I see you have other intentions other than just asking about the future. However, I'll tell you one thing. No one can defy fate. Even if you try to prevent it, the war will still happen regardless of your efforts."
