He managed. Sort of. He said the words written in front of him without actually thinking about them. He probably came across stiff and unfeeling, but it was the only way to get through it. But then he got to the last part. The part that was supposed to win Sophie back. He paused, wondering if he should continue or just stop there. He glanced up and his mum gave him an encouraging smile. He would say what he needed to say anyway, despite Sophie not being there to hear it.
"There were several last minute changes to the plans for this development - critical changes in the design - in order to build the kind of place I know my family will enjoy. The kind of place my wife and daughter will want to visit in years to come. The kind of place my..." he swallowed down his emotions, "my daughter, and any siblings she's lucky enough to have, will want to take their own children to one day." He would not give in to his tears. But it hurt like hell. Sophie wasn't even around to here this. What hope did he have now? "My family is everything to me," he murmured almost to himself, not focussing on anyone. "Which is why I named the restaurant after my... wife, and the kid's club after my daughter." He stopped, unable to say anymore words even if he tried. He stared down at the floor, numb to everything except the gaping hole in his chest.
"What Tom is trying to say, is that we've been lucky enough to entice the world famous, Michelin starred chef, Pablo Constantine..." his brother's voice continued as he took over the microphone. Tom managed to stumble off the stage, returning to his room where he could be alone.
He would drown his sorrows for tonight, then try to figure out if there was anything else he could do to win her back. Tomorrow.
"I wish I could've gone to the ball last night," Jasmine pouted the next morning.
"It was too late for you," Sophie murmured, not wanting to think about the previous night and seeing Tom.
"I want to be a princess too. Can I wear your princess dress?" Jasmine asked.
"It's not my dress, Jass, it's Aunty Dani's," Sophie shook her head.
"Was Daddy there?"
