"Don't say anything," she shook her head as she stepped into his room and closed the door behind her. "Please just let me talk."
He nodded and carried Jasmine over towards the bed, where he sat and waited for Sophie to talk, Jass still in his arms.
"Jass, can you come and sit down here?" Sophie asked as she reached for the little girl.
"No! I just want Daddy!" Jass squirmed away from her mother and clung even tighter around his neck.
"I'm here, sweetheart, and I'm not going anywhere," he crooned to his baby girl. "But Jass, sweetie, I need to talk to Mummy, okay?" He said as he looked down into her eyes.
"Okay," she nodded, still clinging to him like she'd never let go.
"Can you sit on the bed for a minute while we talk?" he asked and ran a hand over her blonde head.
Jasmine simply nodded, but didn't let go. Instead she kissed him. "I love you, Daddy. Please don't leave again. I missed you so much."
"I'm not going anywhere, sweetie," he murmured and kissed her cheek before he ran a hand over her hair. He hoped that it was a good sign that Sophie had brought Jasmine with her to see him. Either that or she brought her to say goodbye. That thought threatened to break him completely, but he wouldn't let it. She was here. And as long as she was here, he had a chance.
He dropped Jass onto the bed and stood up to face Sophie, his heart beating hard in his chest. He'd never had so much at stake as he did right now, and he'd do whatever it took to convince her that he loved her and Jasmine and was never, ever letting them go. He only hoped his brain would work well enough to get the words out.
Sophie took her lip between her teeth and looked around the room, her eyes snagging on the half empty bottle on the table. Her blue gaze met his then.
"You look awful," she murmured.
"I feel awful," he admitted as he stood in front of her.
"Did you drink all of that?" she asked, nodding her head in the direction of the scotch.
"Yep," he chuckled, his eyes never leaving hers. "I'm regretting it today, but it sort of helped last night, after you left."
"I'm sorry I left like that." She swallowed hard and he could see she was fighting her own emotions. At least it showed she still felt something for him. "You were right, we need to talk."
