Though the others were displeased, they had no choice but to leave once they heard the Blackwell family was involved.

Julian asked, “Still want to have fun?”

Isabel shook her head.

Julian was wealthy, but this wasn't the way to spend money.

It was completely unnecessary.

As she led Leo toward the exit, she could still hear Selena’s soft, chiding voice. “Adrian, why must you be so difficult with Isabel? She’s just helping a friend out, watching a child for the day.”

Adrian’s voice was cold. “She won’t even take care of her own child, but she’s happy to take care of someone else’s.”

Selena replied, “Well, Isabel is still upset, isn’t she? You should go after her, talk things out.”

Adrian retorted, “She doesn’t listen to reason.”

...

Julian, with his sharper hearing, caught the exchange as well.

He asked with a smile, “You’re just going to leave like that?”

“What else?” Isabel was exasperated. “Are you suggesting we throw more money at him?”

“He doesn’t seem like the type who can be swayed by money.”

Standing at the crosswalk, Isabel held Leo’s hand and waited for the light, apologizing to him. “I’m sorry I couldn’t show you a good time today.”

Leo shook his head. “Don’t say that, Isabel. If you hadn’t brought me here, I would’ve had to stay home from school. I wouldn’t have gotten this pencil case and stickers.”

The child’s innocent words were incredibly comforting. “It’s not like I’ve never been to an amusement park. Missing out today is no big deal. Right now, I really want to play the claw machine!”

Isabel couldn’t help but kneel and hug him. “You can have any stuffed animal you want. I’ll win it for you.”

Leo emerged from the restroom, his hands washed, and the three of them headed for the arcade to play the claw machines.

It had been a long time since Isabel had played. The last time was before Oliver had turned two.

Oliver, however, had never shown much interest in claw machines. He preferred more thrilling activities.

He once flew to another country just to ride in a helicopter piloted by Selena, with Adrian also on board. But Selena made a pilot error, nearly killing father and son. She did, however, react quickly enough to land the helicopter.

When Isabel got the news, she rushed over to handle the aftermath. Selena was crying her eyes out.

Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, just some minor injuries. But when Isabel returned home, Mrs. Blackwell gave her a vicious lecture.

She called Isabel a jinx and made things difficult for her during their monthly prayers at Holy Trinity Cathedral, claiming that her lack of faith was what had nearly gotten Adrian and Oliver killed.

And yet, even though Selena had abandoned the father and son on the helicopter, she had escaped without a scratch. And neither of them ever blamed her.

Isabel had given her all, but they would always love Selena, never her.
