Julian noticed the shift in her mood and gently bumped her shoulder with his.
“Which one do you want?”
Isabel glanced at him, then turned to Leo. “Do you want to try winning one yourself?”
Leo nodded. “Isabel, let’s have a competition!”
“You’re on,” she said with a smile, choosing a claw machine.
Leo found a machine with a prize he wanted, put in a token, and started playing.
Julian had asked Isabel a question but got no reply. Looking a bit bored, he leaned against her machine, watching her half-heartedly.
Claw machines didn't require much skill. Isabel quickly won several prizes.
She glanced over at Leo, who was also doing impressively well, having already won three or four stuffed animals.
They moved from machine to machine, and by the time their tokens ran out, they had filled two large baskets with prizes.
“Do you want to trade some of these for the bigger prizes at the counter, or do you want to take all these home?”
Isabel asked Leo, and the little boy replied, “I want to take all of them home.”
“Alright, then.” Isabel looked at Julian.
Julian called one of his men to come up and carry the stuffed animals to his car. Then, they drove the little boy home.
They left in high spirits, not noticing the elevator doors opening as they walked past, narrowly missing Adrian and Oliver.
Isabel was holding Leo’s hand, and they each clutched two stuffed animals. Julian was also holding a couple, with two ice cream cones in his other hand. They were laughing and talking, clearly having a wonderful time.
“Then let’s go eat.” Selena took Oliver’s hand. “We’ll come back after dinner, and Auntie Selena will win a bunch for you. I’m really good at this.”
But after dinner, Oliver said he was tired, so they went back to Halcyon Hills Residence.
Selena had intended to go back with them, but they passed her apartment on the way, and Adrian dropped her off.
As she got out, she told him, “Oliver definitely misses his mom. She’s his birth mother, after all. That bond is different, something I can’t replace. Adrian, you should really go talk to Isabel. He’s only five, a time when a child really needs his mother. If this continues, I’m worried he might become depressed. It’s quite common in children these days, mostly due to issues at home.”
Adrian grunted in acknowledgment. “Get some rest.”
Selena waved at him with a gentle smile and went inside.
Once he confirmed she was safely in, Adrian turned and drove away.
