Isabel paid no mind to Adrian's expression. After speaking, she headed for the guest bedroom.
But a faint fragrance lingered in the air of the guest room.
It was the unique, custom-made perfume that Selena adored.
With her keen sense of smell, she knew she wasn't mistaken.
So, she backed out of the room.
"Martha."
"Yes!"
Martha, who had been observing from a distance, appeared immediately. "What can I do for you?"
Isabel said, "If it's not too much trouble, I'll just stay with you tonight."
Halcyon Hills Residence was large, but every room had its purpose.
The other spaces had been allocated before their marriage.
For just one night, she couldn't be bothered to tidy up another guest room.
Martha didn't mind, but she felt it would be unfair to Isabel.
Before she could speak, Adrian suddenly appeared. "Do you have to make a fuss about everything now?"
Isabel looked at him, her face a blank mask. "It's just as you see, Mr. Blackwell. If this bothers you, then I'm sorry, but I won't change. This is who I am."
Adrian's lips pressed into a thin line. "I told you to come back to see your child. Go sleep with him."
Isabel replied, "He doesn't need me."
Adrian shot back, "How do you know he doesn't?"
Isabel truly didn't want to argue with him. She turned and went to Oliver's room.
When Oliver saw Isabel return, his little brow furrowed, but he didn't say anything.
Isabel lay down directly on his bed, showing no intention of engaging with him.
After a while, Oliver couldn't help but inch closer. "Mom, you haven't washed up or changed your clothes. The bed will get dirty."
He dressed and washed up all by himself, not even letting Martha help.
Martha misunderstood his mood.
She thought he was happy to have his mother back.
She'd always said that Selena could never replace a child's real mother.
But when Oliver came downstairs and didn't see his special breakfast, only Isabel sitting in the living room on her phone, his mood soured instantly.
"Mom, why isn't there a special breakfast now that you're home?"
Isabel didn't even look up. "Sorry, I can't give you what you want. Why don't you ask someone you like to make it for you?"
"How long are you going to hold a grudge against a child?" Adrian came down the stairs, impeccably dressed in a suit. He was tall, handsome, and regal, yet cold and unapproachable.
Isabel gave him only a fleeting, indifferent glance. "Mr. Blackwell, if you have the time for this, you might as well finish your breakfast quickly so we can go to City Hall. If you're in a hurry, then let's skip breakfast and go straight there."
Adrian's brow slowly furrowed. His lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but perhaps feeling that he'd said those words too many times to no effect, he walked straight to the dining room.
