The next time Isabel woke up, she was in Aurelia City.
It was a city perpetually steeped in humid heat.
But the scenery was beautiful.
From the enormous floor-to-ceiling window in her room, she could see the ocean.
“How does it feel to cheat death?”
A jaunty voice broke the silence. “Ever think about what you’d say if you met your maker?”
Isabel looked over to see Julian entering with a tray of simple, local dishes.
“How are you?”
She remembered Julian shielding her during their escape.
The whole ruse had to be maintained, making the process both urgent and dangerous.
“I’ll live.” Julian sat down on the edge of the bed. “A little excitement like that is child’s play for me.”
As she ate, Isabel asked about the situation back home.
Julian didn’t hide anything from her. “You faked your death to lure the authorities into questioning Selena, but you completely underestimated how far Adrian would go to protect her. Not only did Selena not get arrested, but now you’re taking the fall for her.”
“You’re a dead woman. Even if you rose from the grave, you couldn’t clear your name.”
Isabel’s fingers tightened around her spoon.
She had suspected as much.
But she had thought that no matter how much Adrian protected Selena, he couldn’t defy the government.
He would at least have to go through the motions, especially with his own sister in such a prominent position. If he didn't handle it properly, it would put his sister in a very difficult spot.
“How did Selena get away with it?”
Julian laughed. “Selena has foreign citizenship.”
Isabel understood. “Where are Adrian and Selena now?”
“The Gray Zone.”
“The Gray Zone?” Isabel was horrified. “That place has no laws. It’s rife with arson, robbery, and every kind of crime imaginable. Everything our country forbids thrives there. How could he be in the Gray Zone? His brother and sister, the entire Blackwell family, can’t have any contact with that place.”
“You’re asking me?” Julian’s voice turned husky. “Sweetheart, I wasn’t the one married to him for six years.”
Besides, it was unlikely Selena could ever develop a drug superior to Y-2.
When the time came, Isabel would strike once, and with absolute precision.
She would ensure Selena never had a chance to get back up.
“New name, too?”
Before Isabel could answer, Julian’s subordinate, Simon, knocked on the door. “Mr. Reed, you have a visitor.”
Isabel said, “You go handle your business. I need to think.”
Just as Julian stood up, the door was pushed open.
“Let me see what treasure you’re hiding that even I need to be announced.”
Julian moved to pull the man out.
But he slid past him like an eel and leaned in close to Isabel.
“Why does she look so familiar?”
Julian clamped a hand over the man’s eyes. “You say that about every beautiful woman you see.”
