Dr. Lawson was just about to clock out for the day when Adrian cornered him in his office again.

He glanced at the scratches on Selena’s arm, perplexed.

“A nurse could handle this…”

“Do a full workup,” Adrian instructed. “And you handle it personally. She has a delicate constitution; even a minor injury can’t be overlooked.”

There was nothing for it. Dr. Lawson would be working overtime. You didn’t mess with Adrian Blackwell.

Selena was secretly delighted. She could have dodged Oliver’s grasp, but she let him scratch her. She knew Adrian cared for her, that he couldn't bear to see her with so much as a scratch.

She had come to the Blackwell estate when she was twelve, and even back then, Adrian had been just as protective. That was fifteen years ago. She had never once doubted his affection.

By the time Selena’s full examination was complete, the sun was rising.

Dr. Lawson couldn’t hide his exhaustion. “Mr. Blackwell, some of these tests take time. I’m going home to get some rest before I drop dead from overwork. The hospital will call me when the results are in.”

Adrian grunted in acknowledgment and led Selena back to her room.

“Don’t go see Oliver,” he told her. “He’s unstable and might hurt you. I’ll handle him.”

Selena gave a soft hum and a nod, a touch of shyness in her expression. “Adrian, thank you for caring so much. After my grandfather passed and my aunt started her own family, you’re the only one who cares for me so unconditionally, just like my grandfather did.”

Adrian patted her shoulder. “Get some sleep. Call me if you need anything. I’m right next door.”

“Okay.”

Adrian went to the adjacent room. Oliver was still sitting on the bed, just as he’d left him.

He pulled a chair over and sat down in front of the boy. “She’s not here. Missing her now is useless; she can’t see it.”

Julian had assembled a team of top medical experts.

When Evelyn flew from overseas to Aurelia City to see her, she brought along a brilliant physician, the kind who worked with Doctors Without Borders.

But Isabel’s lung condition couldn't be cured by medication; it could only be managed and allowed to heal slowly over time.

Julian’s medical team had done everything they could.

The international doctor, however, had a suggestion. “There’s a Dr. Moore in this country. While her Y-2 drug has its issues, if a derivative could be developed from it, it might have the ability to repair Miss Hayes’s lungs.”

Everyone in the room understood the implication.

Evelyn politely saw the doctor out and then turned to Isabel. “Didn’t you already create an upgraded version?”

Isabel had made a limited supply, all of which she had given to Old Mrs. Blackwell. The matriarch’s condition was more severe; her organ vitality needed to be stimulated to boost her own immunity.
