Isabel spent nearly all her time in the lab. Julian had been away for a few days, and she didn't need to worry about the wedding arrangements. But she was anxious to get the marriage license, see old Mr. Reed, and gain access to his family's knowledge of herbalism and traditional medicine.

So, during a meal break, she sent Julian a message.

[Julian, when are you coming back?]

He replied instantly: [Miss me?]

Isabel sent back an eye-rolling emoji.

Julian didn't reply, but that evening, he returned to the villa in Aurelia City, and with him was a boy of about six.

"Don't tell me that's your secret love child," Evelyn, who happened to be there, blurted out.

Julian ignored her and spoke to Isabel. "This kid is perfect for you. You'll see once you take him to the lab."

Isabel's brow furrowed. "You can't be serious. You think a boy this young can help me with my experiments?"

"You said you were short-staffed," Julian said simply.

"..."

She needed adult lab assistants, not a child who could barely hold a test tube. This wasn't playing house.

Isabel decided to drop it, but she still offered the boy a small smile.

"When are we getting the license?" she asked, changing the subject.

Julian grinned and retorted, "So eager to marry me, are you?"

Isabel was only after the herbs and medical techniques.

"By the way, I noticed a nice plot of empty land to the right of the lab. It would be perfect for an herb garden."

"That was left vacant specifically for you," Julian said.

"Don't worry about the license. Just accept the boy; you won't regret it. I'm formally adopting him, so he'll be our son. You two should start bonding."

"So you and Isabel aren't planning on having kids of your own?" Evelyn asked.

Julian didn't answer. His phone rang, and he stepped away to take the call.

Evelyn looked at Isabel.

"I can't," Isabel said quietly. "I had a hysterectomy. I had an amniotic fluid embolism during Oliver's birth. They removed my uterus to save my life. I was lucky to survive."

"Holy crap!" Evelyn exclaimed, furious. "You went through all that, and for what? For that ungrateful little brat?"

Isabel nodded in agreement.

She looked at the child and asked gently, “What's your name?”
