Julian hadn't even known who she married or where she was, yet he had managed to strike at her heart more accurately than anyone else. The truth was, the snowstorm had just been the final straw. Even without it, she probably would have asked for a divorce anyway. The only question would have been whether or not to fight for custody.
"You don't need to convince me." Isabel reached for the wok, but Evelyn snatched it away. "I'll get it."
She looked at her friend and continued, "I know you're worried about me and want to see me happy. And I will be, Evelyn. I won't make the same mistake twice."
"That's good to hear."
Evelyn, following Isabel's instructions, finished up the last of the cooking and tidied the kitchen before bringing the dishes to the table.
Edmund, ever observant, ran over to help. He wasn't tall enough, so he stood on a stool to set out the bowls and utensils.
"You're a great helper," Isabel said, stroking his head.
"Thank you for the compliment, Mommy!" Edmund beamed.
"Go get your daddy."
Julian was a busy man. In the short time they'd been cooking, he had disappeared somewhere.
Edmund ran out of the villa and asked the guards on duty.
"I'll call Mr. Reed, young master. You should go back inside," a guard replied.
Edmund ran back and relayed the message.
Isabel pulled out a chair for him. "Let's eat first."
"I'll do it." Julian came in from outside and sat down on Edmund's other side, taking the crab they were wrestling over. Having grown up by the sea, Julian, despite being waited on, was quite skilled at handling seafood.
"Wow!" Edmund clapped enthusiastically. "You're amazing, Daddy."
"Want to learn?" Julian placed the first portion of crab meat in Isabel's bowl, then picked up another one to work on. "I can teach you," he offered to Edmund.
"Okay!" Edmund watched Julian's hands intently, as if he were studying for a major exam.
Across the table, Evelyn couldn't help but say, "Watching you all makes me want to have a baby."
Isabel put some food on her plate. "You'd better be prepared. Once they're out, you can't put them back in. It's like opening a mystery box; there's no guarantee you'll get a sensible one."
